How to collect e-mails for those who don't convert

What are the best ways to collect e-mails for people who don't convert/create a paid account on my landing page? I want to get everything I can out of ads. i.e if I can get an e-mail of someone who would not have converted, I can at least try e-mail marketing on them. If someone comes to my landing page and doesn't sign up into a paying customer, what would be a good way to collect their e-mail so that I can re-target them?

I've seen those exit pop ups before, but I'm worried they will just pop up at the wrong time and put people off converting. What are peoples experience with this?

Exit intent pop-ups work well, if you have the right offer. There's no reason not to try using them -- but keep the visitor in mind.

Give them something of value for free. Try different things like:

    • top x things (related to your category)
    • ebook (how-to, advice -- even if it's a couple pages)
    • discount (if applicable)
    • opt-in to receive a curated list of the most popular articles on your site (presented in a compelling way)

Once you collect their email, see if you can setup a little email drip campaign that keeps the people who opt-in somewhat engaged. Use the drip campaign to build trust.

Regarding exit intent -- If I recall correctly, I don't believe they work on mobile, so you need to figure out an alternative way to present the same offer on mobile that won't overly disrupt their visiting experience.

    Hope the info helps.

        Interesting options, thanks for sharing!

I usually use a pre-made tool, like holdonstranger.com, to serve different types of overlays. Not sure if any of the tools have adopted scroll indicators like that for exit intent on mobile, but I'll look into it further.

        Thanks again!
