Hi Allen.
I must agree with your post. I have seen so many startups, which just got started without any validation, or any problems which needed to be solved. I think that is essential to success.
Sure, you can succeed with something new, or something fancy that no-one asked for. But I think it is way easier to build something, which eases the pain of a lot of people.
For example, we are working on ERA - The Markdown Note-Taking Tool For Developer.
We decided to work on it, as we were not satisfied with any other note-taking tools.

As we validated the idea, we saw that many fellow developers suffer with the same pain. So it is up to us to deliver a tool with developers in mind and fix all these issues mentioned above.
