How to Create a Developer Marketing Strategy

I wanted to give a few tips to any indiehackers that are trying to market developer tools.

  1. Creating Developer Content

Your product is not going to sell itself. You'll need to drive traffic to your landing page some how and you probably don't have a budget for paid ads. In my opinion, the best way forward to create content that attracts your target audience in the form of blog posts, youtube videos, podcasts, and other forms of content.

  1. Community Building

You should start a community as soon as possible. It doesn't have to be very fancy and could be a simple Discord or Slack channel. A Discord/Slack Channel will help you gather feedback about your product as well as serve as a way to gain trust with your community. Be sure to be responsive, otherwise your community members will churn.

  1. Having Great Documentation

One of the first things a developer does when evaluating your product is to check out how good your documentation is. Having a badly maintained documentation site is a major turn off to any developer. Keep your documentation searchable and at the very least have a Getting Started Guide so that users can get stuck when trying our your product for the first time.
