Hey IndieHackers!
I've posted here a couple of times before, but today I wanted to share some of the lessons I've learned from my year-long deep dive into SEO for my B2B SaaS startup. You might've guessed it, but there's way more to SEO than just keyword research. Let me share the journey and some golden nuggets I picked up along the way.
Mistakes I Made Early On with SaaS SEO:
- Traffic Over Conversions: I was so hooked on getting eyeballs on my site that I overlooked the importance of those eyeballs converting into actual users or customers.
- Disregarding Low-Volume Keywords: Thought 0 volume keyword were useless. Spoiler alert: They're not.
- One-Size-Fits-All SEO: I mistakenly believed that what works for one industry or website would work for all. Couldn't have been more off the mark.
Golden Nuggets from My SEO Adventure:
- Company Pages Are Crucial: It hit me that pages like About, Contact, and Pricing aren’t just placeholders. They actually contribute to trust and domain authority.
- Keyword Research - The Right Way: Shifting my focus from merely high-volume keywords to those indicating high intent (like comparison, alternatives, features, integrations) was a game-changer. These typically capture users who are closer to making decisions.
- Content with Intent: Gone are the days of writing for the heck of it. Now, it's all about truly catering to the user's query and ensuring the content aligns with their search intent. The more you write, the more you understand "search intent" so write more!
- Quality Over Quantity in Link Building: I discovered that a single high-quality backlink can be more impactful than mediocre ones. 66.31% of pages have zero backlinks (source: BrightEdge). Pro-tip: Look for articles like "Top X SaaS for Y" and pitch your product to the writer.
- Technical SEO Isn't to be Neglected: After a particularly challenging site migration, I realized the significance of aspects like indexing, page speed, and rich snippets. Google Search Console is now a tool I swear by. Feed Google with regular content and watch your topical authority soar.
SEO is definitely a marathon and not a sprint. But let me tell you, the rewards are more than worth the effort. And if you follow these tips, it doesn't have to take months to get your first pages ranked on Google (actually, weeks)!

I’m an SEO novice, but this seems counter-intuitive to me:
“Thought 0 volume keyword were useless. Spoiler alert: They're not.”
If nobody is searching for a keyword, how can that be of value to you?
OK - your linked article mentions it: "15% of Google searches have never been searched before"
Exactly! Google is always looking for new content to eat. Some keywords may have 0 volume according to SEO tools like ahref, SEMrush, etc but there is always 0-5 people per month searching for it and it can be high intent. You have to do a mass strategy to aim for these keywords (programmatic SEO).
