How to find long tail keywords for my startup?

@AmyWilliamson - I do not know your background. If you are a newbie to the world of SEO; I'd highly recommend investing in keyword research software like ahrefs.com. It eliminates all the struggle in finding the right keywords and gives you the traffic and information about your competition (which is meet-up).

"Alternative to" pages are typically 'purchase intent' oriented and you should spend considerable time optimising those pages / articles.

Do not worry about people coming to your site who already know about your competition. It's a good thing - that you don't have to explain them what your site does. Simply make sure that the messaging tells them that your software is much better.

Most of your target users would be searching for 'meet-ups near me' or 'meet-ups in <city>'. You might want to target those keywords and create highly optimised pages. Aim to be #2 or #3 on Google. People will definitely land on your website.

I think what you can do is initially search for long tail keywords related to meetup, and make a list of them. You can search for long-tail keywords in online keyword tools like: https://apps.webmatrices.com/long-tail-keywords.

After making the list. You can compare those keywords in Google Keywords planner. I believe using both tools side by side will help you to find a better, easier, and more profitable long-tail keyword.

Try to find "side topics", as I like to call them. In other words, other topics your target audience might also be interested in. For example, "how to organize an event" or "how much to charge for a local meetup".

If you want a free and simple option, just think of a couple of phrases like the above, then go to Google, do a search and look at the People Also Ask section.

5. best online clubs for gardening (<- fill in the blank)
6. online groups and meet ups for board games (<-fill in the blank)

8. tech (<- fill in the blank) meetups near me

I think 5-8 is where you'll make your most hay. Granted, it will take a ton of work on your side, but if you spend time/energy into your landing page, you'll have high converting traffic.

I think it is a good thing to attract people who already using Meetup.com. They are already buying or using a solution that is similar to yours. If your value proposition is unique, or even better, then they will switch to yours in no time.
