How to find users for expense tracker?

Today I launched the first version of my expense tracker Spendyt. The problem is that I don't know where to get users from. I know I should be posting on forums, but I don't know where. There are several subreddits regarding financials, but they don't allow self promotion.

Any advice on how or where to find possible users?

(Feedback on spendyt.com is always welcome)

I could not find "feedback," "Q&A," or Forum on your site, but I have QQs: How do people enter data into your tool (I hope not manually)? And how do they see the analysis based on modification? I mean, I would use it if (my fantasy) I can input CSV from my credit card purchases, and your product would "suggest" something like "I know you like apples, but if you change your purchasing habits into pears, you would have saved one euro last week..." All I know from the front page, that I have to register to learn how I will be interacting with Spendyt... It says plenty that your product has pretty graphs and can help... Simple video would help (at least me). 2c

Thank you for taking a look at Spendyt!

Yes maybe it would be good if I added some kind of faq and a simple video. But yes, you have to type in manualy. Uploading a csv is a feature I was thinking about implementing as a next feature (as also exporting data). Some applications also offer the option to link your bank account, but honestly, I'd never do that.

I use something similar for work, never thought of using it for personal stuff.

One piece of advice on Reddit: Don't sell >> Educate.

Post relevant content about your offer like analysis, in depth studies, bring data, show a different angle etc without promoting your stuff (one of my posts is the #1 voted post of all time in /sales and it's not promotional at all but people still found a way to criticize it for being promotional)

    Congrats on the launch!

There was a similar question posted on another thread. I am including my response below. These are a few tested/proven customer acquisitionon ideas.

Participate in Facebook groups and other niche communities that service your market.

Reverse engineer your competitor's plan with these tools:

    -- Traffic sources: @SimilarWeb
    -- Email templates &flows: @mailcharts
-- Ad designs w/ FB Transparency Tools
    --Ad spend: @spyfu
    --Keywords: ahrefs

Search the Competition: Look at up your competitors in G2 (the other similar services). See what customers are saying about your competitors - the good and bad. Use that to make a better mousetrap. Create content that addresses common issues they bring up and post it in a blog for example.

Be Personal: When you onboard your first customers, handwrite a note, share a personalization video message or email. Use a service like SendSpark to create personalized videos so you stand out.

Use Quora: Figure out what the most questions on quora are related to 'your product category' and address them on your blog:

    Step 1. Use Hrefs
Step 2. Go to “Organic Search” — “Positions”.
Step 3. Input quora.com into the search field.
Step 4. Scroll down to “Organic search positions” and add 3 filters:
    a.) Include + Keyword + Containing + YOUR_KEYWORD
    b.) Include + Pos. + Less than + 10
    c.) Include + Volume + Greater than + 100
    Step 5. Hit “Apply”
Step 6. Scroll down to the keywords.
Step 7. There you’ll find a list of keywords where Quora is ranked on page #1 of Google.
Step 8. Open each URL and a valuable answer with a link to your website.
Step 9. Your answer is instantly on page #1

Give Thanks: Take advantage of the thank you (confirmation page) after someone signs up, upsells, invite to a webinar, link to most popular blog posts, ask for a social follow, ask for a social share.

Create an ebook/lead magnets by repurposing your best (insert your business category) tips - if you have enough content do it by each custom niche. ie. "25 Productivity Hacks that will save you money." Better if the content is evergreen.

Partner up. Find complimentary blogs/newsletters where you can cross-promote

ImPRESS: Subscribe to HARO and respond to reporter's requests. https://www.helpareporter.com/. They are always looking for experts in the financial category

Blog and guest post on other blogs, find a relevant podcast to get interviewed by.

Add a sign-up URL to your email signature, LI profile, Facebook - anywhere you have a social profile

    Hope that was helpful.

I will definitely take a look into this, thank you!

The landing page looks good, clear about what you do and I like the graphics.

As for where to get users from: Who is your target audience? Is there a niche this tool was built for? Is Spendyt B2C or B2B?

    1. 1

      Thanks!

It's B2C. I'd say it's mostly for people who want to start keeping track of what they're spending. Spendyt is a simple way to start doing that.

      1. 2

For B2C you'll probably want to be active in a lot of financial communities online. There'll be endless forums for this topic and Subreddits like r/personalfinance would be a good place to start. Shameless advertising most likely won't work, so you'll need to be active - answer people's questions, ask questions of your own, engage in discussions, and generally become a valued member of the community. Whenever it's relevant to your answer, you can mention Spendyt. After a while of being active you'll get away with advertising Spendyt directly too.

You can also go down alternate routes like partnering with accountants and having them recommend Spendyt to all of their sole trader or self-assessment clients. You can also look at doing paid advertising on platforms like Google and Facebook.

If you're still after your first customers, ask friends and family to use your app. They will all want to see you succeed and should be quite open to doing so, especially because the app is free. After they've started using Spendyt ask them to share about it on their own social media accounts.

It might be worth you sitting down and writing a detailed profile of your perfect customer and explore a niche for you to focus on. An app built for everybody speaks to nobody. An app built just for you, will speak to you and draw you in. Eg, pivoting Spendyt to be an expenses app for people who are living in a van and travelling full time will help you tailor functionality and draw that specific group of people in more easily. Obviously do some research and make sure this group has a problem that Spendty will solve before pivoting.

Thank you for your elaborate answer! I will definitely start to look more into financial communities and becoming an active member, that's probably the best route here.
