How to finding Micro SaaS Ideas around Supabase to build $1K MRR products

No fluffy content. If your goal is to build a $100m ARR business, this is not the right post. Here I am are NOT going to talk about the building the next Facebook or Twitter. If your goal is to make a $1K to $10K MRR, continue reading.

This post will cover one SAAS area and talk about multiple niches in this space. This post also explains how to do tech implementation, do market analysis, how the current players are doing, and ends with a cost analysis to understand the overall cost for 100 users.

We are going to see some good Micro SaaS ideas around something called - ‘Supabase’.

If you haven’t heard of Supabase, it’s okay. This is relatively a new platform gaining a lot of traction and hundreds of people started using this platform. But you can start looking at it here.

Let dive deep and see about this rapidly trending niche.

Negative Nancy says - ‘Isn’t Supabase relatively new? Why bet on something relatively new?’

Me - Supabase is relatively new. But while being in beta, the growth of Supabase is phenomenal. There are 22K searches per month for ‘Supabase’ and this much search volume is huge for a newcomer.

Negative Nancy says - ‘Why do people use Supabase instead of Airtable, Google sheets, and Notion?

Me - Well, each has its advantages and disadvantages. While Airtable, Google sheets, and Notion are more around no code, Supabase revolves a little bit of tech to use the platform. But there is a good number of advantages of building applications of Supabase. Almost all platforms like Google Sheets, Airtable, Notion come with limitations around the number of requests and usage. With Supabase, users have no limitations around requests/usage and so founders are using Supabase to build applications without the need to worry about limitations by third-party platforms like Google, Airtable, Notion, etc.

Deep-dive

For starters, Supabase is an all-in-one platform for backend API, database, storage, and auth for building SaaS applications. Supabase significantly reduces the development time to build backend for apps and Micro SaaS applications.

Here is the growing trend of Supabase.

How is Supabase different from Google Sheets, Airtable, Notion & Coda?

Platforms like Google Sheets, Airtable, Notion are being used by thousands of users every day to store data. But these platforms come with their own limitations in the number of requests, requests/second, number of users, etc. To remove this limitation, Enterprise companies are looking for other alternatives as easy as Google Sheets, Airtable, Notion but not as complex as setting up the database server, writing APIs, etc. That is where exactly ‘Supabase’ is coming into the picture. It brings the ease of NoCode platforms and brings the advantages of databases with just a little bit of setup/low code.

Building solutions on Supabase also helps customers to maintain compliances like GDPR etc as the data is managed by you instead of being managed by Google, Airtable, Notion, etc.

Some niches

Form builder to insert data into Supabase: There are many form builders available with a lot of integrations for pushing data to Google Sheets, Airtable, etc. Create a Form builder that runs on top of Supabase and pushes data to Supabase. Make sure the form builder is super dynamic with drag and drop functionality. If you could add conditional logic to the calculator like ConvertCalculator (by the way ConvertCalculator crossed $10K MRR by building NoCode Form builder), it would make it much better. But instead of saving the form data on your server, you would let customers connect their Supabase account and map the data to their Supabase Database Tables/fields. This is a big requirement for many industries and Enterprise customers in various domains like Finance, Mechanical industries where there is a great need for forms and data entry every day. A one-packaged solution for a hosted form builder that runs on top of customers’ Supabase will be a good fit.

File uploader that runs on Supabase Object storage: File uploader for SaaS applications is still a problem to be solved because of the complexities involved with setup, storage, limitations, setting error messages, etc. That is why the solutions like Micro SaaS solutions like SimpleFileUpload crossed $1K MRR in less than 6 months after the launch. Create a similar Micro SaaS solution for customers who want to add ‘file uploader’ functionality to their apps. But instead of storing the files on your own servers and ‘locking-in’ the customers, provide a solution that customers can get as a one-package that helps them to the file upload functionality into their apps and also store the files onto their own Supabase Storage account. For starters, Supabase Storage so here. If you are aware of AWS S3, that’s the same way Supabase Storage works too but in a much simpler fashion.

White-label Website builder that runs on Supabase: The demand for website builders never ceases no matter how many websites builders come into the market every day. Create a Micro SaaS product that installs a website builder on a customer’s Supabase account that customers can use as a ‘white-labeled’ product for his/her customers. Build it like a one-click install option or make it installable with simple scripts so customers can easily run it in their Supabase accounts. Duda website builder with white-label features makes hundreds of millions in revenues. Create a simple white-label model that Agencies can install by themselves or companies can install by themselves.

Applications/Internal Tools that can be created on top of Supabase: Create a Micro SaaS tool that can help users create internal tools, dashboards, charts, secured login access - all that can run from Supabase data. It will need to be something like Retool that can create internal dashboards, logins, but runs in Supabase. Note that Retool is highly profitable making $7M/year. Also, see a sample of what all. The tool should be able to build an admin panel, a user portal, a customer support dashboard, or an inventory tool on top of your Supabase data. It should provide features to add new users and manage subscriptions in real-time via a handy dashboard. To get an understanding of this, see the example from UIBakery here.

NoCode tool to send data to Supabase: Create a Micro SaaS NoCode tool that can insert data into Supabase from various data sources. For example, if someone wants to send the Shopify data into Supabase, the tool should be able to do the setup with drag and drop controls to select the source, target, actions, and recurring schedule. Similarly, if someone wants to send their Stripe data, Youtube data, or any other data from APIs to their Supabase account, it takes a lot of time to write the code, do the recurring setup, etc. Create a no-code automation tool that can solve this purpose primarily to push data into Supabase from various data sources. See DataFetcher that crossed $4K MRR in less than a year with a similar tool but for Airtable.

SaaS starter kit on top of Supabase: With everyone trying to build Micro SaaS applications, the demand for SaaS starter kits increased heavily. There are already successful SaaS starter kits like DivJoy, UseGravity that make thousands of dollars. Pick a niche like Supabase and build a SaaS starter kit around Supabase features. The beauty of Supabase is that it comes with its own Auth, Storage, Tables, APIs that make it an easier choice for most people to buy your product built on top of Supabase. See ShipSaaS for inspiration. ShipSaaS made $400 in revenue in 1 month of the launch and increased the price by 6 times.

Blogging solution that runs on Supabase: There are several blogging solutions like Ghost, WordPress, etc. Because of the power of SEO, most people want to set up blogs and own the content without going through complex server setups. Create a Micro SaaS solution that can create a blog and run on top of a customer Supabase account. Supabase has options like a database to store data, file storage to store files. Building a proper blog solution on top of Supabase is will be a good solution for most people to run the blog on their own infrastructure without the need to do multiple setups.

Info product/Video course etc: If you have some technical knowledge, create an info product for anyone trying to learn the Supabase ecosystem. Supabase is growing bigger day by day with more features coming in. Create an info product like a PDF or a video course with some code base samples. Infact, this approach can give you your first set of audience to sell anything related to Supabase. May be you can create a SaaS starter kit that runs on top of Supabase and teach the users the same.

Fun Projects to give you some traction

Website to showcase products built with Supabase: (Another example to start small) With everyone trying to build applications using Supabase, create a showcase website that displays the products built with Supabase. See MadeWithSupabase for a sample. This could be a fun project and this helps you get connected to a lot of founders who want to showcase their products. If you are a first-time founder, this will help you get up and running with a good number of connections to founders.

Supabase setup & maintenance: Supabase is an open-source product and can be installed as a native setup as well. While Supabase has a cloud setup without worrying about servers, some founders want to do their own setup. Create a small one-time paid (recurring for maintenance) service to do the Supabase setup from scratch.

Plug and play Auth solution that runs on Supabase Auth: Supabase also has a feature to handle Authentication of apps. This feature is called ‘Supabase Auth’.

Build a plug-and-play solution that app users can use for their Auth. A few alternatives for this kind of auth solution are GCP Firebase Auth and AWS Cognito. Supabase already made auth process easy with its Auth feature. But building a quick package, npm module, plug and play solution on top of Supabase Auth can give good traction if you want to double-down on the Supabase niche. This could also act as a ‘growth-hacking’ project to get people's attention.

Marketing chops

Supabase is a premium product which means the customers already paying for Supabase are solving a problem that their users have been paying for (in most cases). So, this kind of customer tends to pay for any product that solves a real problem.

Here are some good places to get traction for products built around Supabase:

Cost Analysis for 100 customers

In almost all cases, as you are building a solution on top of the customer’s Supabase account, the cost is almost always zero. For example, if you are building a “SaaS starter kit on top of Supabase”, the starter kit/code doesn’t need a server to run by itself. So, there is no cost for you to implement this. The same is the case with other idea implementations like “White-label Website builder that runs on Supabase”.

In most of the cases around this, the cost for 100 customers is zero. Even if you need to use Supabase for any of this, Supabase has a generous free tier for 500MB of database and a paid tier of $25/m for 8GB of the database. In most cases, the 500MB free tier would suffice

We're bootstrapping a new way to generate videos for blogs. I found in my previous company the power of video on social. It really skyrockets your social reach. You can give it a try at vidon.ai.
