How to get a Knowledge Panel on Google (Tips+Tools)

Google knowledge panels are automatically generated infoboxes in the right rail of the search results page (SERP) for prominent entities.
A knowledge panel has the title, subtitle, description, and may include key facts, links to official websites, and social media channels, if available.
There are three types of knowledge panels: branded, personal, and local.
To get highlighted in a great knowledge panel, you need to have several factors fall into place:

  • the subject matter is covered on its own website,
  • information about it appears on multiple external resources,
  • and there are active social media channels with a highly engaged following.
All these show that the entity is well-known, noteworthy, and Google actually connected all dots to form this entity.
The question is whether it is beneficial for a website SEO to have an entity. Usually, it is beneficial for the entity itself, as it increases its recognition. However, a knowledge panel takes away a portion of clicks from websites in the first ranking positions. Still, some SEOs argeu that it's not a big deal, since the clicks are from users with informational intent, anyway, they wouldn't have converted.
Optimization for getting a knowledge panel on Google is pretty starightforwad, a bit of structured data and well-optimized website/business listing/Wikipedia article does the 80% of the job. However, knowledge panels (just like featured snippets) may step into the SERP as a real game-changer for your target keywords. The guide explores the benefits of knowledge panels, and shows some tools how to review an entity's knowledge panel, and how to edit knowledge panels.

I'd love to hear any win stories (because mine, especially of editing Wikipedia articles and working with link outreachers) are sometimes frustrating.
