Hello, IndieHackers:)
My name is Stanislav. I`m a UI designer and co-founder of MetaSurvey.
Our small team two indie devs have finally pulled our swipe survey builder to $100 MRR! It took us 2.5 years to work as a side project. We are 100% self-funded and bootstrapped.
Yeah, that is long! (Yet, we never thought of quitting!)
Now I decided to launch at AppSumo - to drive those new customers and grow to $500 MRR ;) I chose AS because it has a simple interface and vivid USP/UVPs for the customers (a cheap lifetime deal). Also, AS team helps you with the launch.
The main idea is to give a startup a much wider exposure, beyond google/bing organic traffic and IH / PH community. Also, with cheap prices and exclusive Lifetime deals you can reach the relatively "cheap" markets: India, Pakistan, China, and the like. As smbd said: it`s better to sell a $1 product to 10M customers, than a $1000 product to 10. IMAO, that's fair
AppSumo is a discounter for startups and SaaS projects, where you can promote your project via a % discount campaign - a lifetime deal. You can upload from 200 to 10 000 "taco" coupons.
Why did I choose AS? Cause after 2.5 years of building, we still don`t have traction and a stable flow of customers. Sales are often random and come from different sources (Google organic, remarketing from our surveys)
As a SaaS project, we got a Freemium pricing model: almost all survey builder features are unlocked on the Free plan. Also, we got Pro and Pro+ subscription plans ($18/mo and $58/mo) which remove the 10-question / 150-responses limits, add additional features and remove our logo.
For our survey builder we suggested a Lifetime deal for $58.00
$144.00instead of paying $12 x 12mo =$144 yearly. So you get a Lifetime license for 50% of the yearly payment for all Pro options.
Basically, AS gives you a personal manager - you can book a call for a platform demo, and ask advice on pre-launch, launch day, post-launch, or any other questions.
Also, they published a Ultimate marketing playbook, where you can read a pre-launch checklist, advises on launch and tips to widen exposure and traffic on your product page.
The platform has some promotional features:
Some promo features will unlock when you reach different review milestones of 5 / 10 / 15 / 50 reviews. Some soptions are available from the start.
Actually, in fitrst hours - launch gave us absolutely NOTHING at the moment. Some traffic and a badge on our beautiful landing page, build with the Unicorn platform by @alexanderisora.
I do not know if we did something wrong, but the AppSumo team did not add us to any of the categories on the main page, even to New arrivals and Spotlight categories. That is really weird.
We perfectly filled our the product page, uploaded max pictures, uploaded pricing plans, promo-codes, set up pre-launch emails as AS advised, and were on the call with the support manager, but nothing helped.
So IndieHackers, can you kindly advise on the AppSumo launch:
We created a cool survey for you to give feedback.
AppSumo has two different listing types: Self-listed and Select.
Self-listed means that you list your own offer, but they dont give you much. You have to drive your own sales before you get some 5/10/15 reviews and they start to promote you more.
I think that at that point you get an offer to turn to Select, where they mass promote you on their website, emails, and everywhere. At that point you should make thousand of sales.
But, because always there is a but, if self-listed get 75-95% revenueshare, when you turn Select you only get 25-30%, the rest of the money is invested in marketing.
So, if your product is sold LTD at $58, you will get only about $20. If you can handle the support with that money, there are a lot of advantages around it, a lot of exposure, practically turning an unknown product into a market proven one.
The hard part is to get to that 5 reviews.
If you have some money, invest in some Google Adwords or Facebook Campaigns that target AppSumo users and fans.
Much thanks for a detailed recommendations! We are trying to expand MetaSurvey`s exposure across web and get those 5 reviews :) Not only on AS, but either on G2 and so
Our team will be grateful for your reply!
I think that first you have to drive traffic on your own until you make enough sales to get those 5 reviews.
They recommend to ask the buyers to leave reviews if they liked the product.
Hey @faptebune 👋
Thanks for your detailed guide and tips!
We already got the first purchase last night. It brought us only $36. The commission is too high in my opinion.
In a day I'll request a review from my first sumo-ling customer! Wish to get it 🌟
Anyway, I feel happy that it works.
The cold start is the hardest part. I would recommend looking for "LTD" communities on Facebook and checking out when owner/operators/creators/makers of products show up and help members understand the product more. Much more casual friendly way than just pitching in a landing page.
If just posting there your product on AS doesn't work, contact Admins and ask if they do giveaways or anything else to help support.
The admins of these groups A) want to grow the group B) want the group to be helpful useful and great value for members C) they want to make money, they make money via affiliate links most of the time. So let them share the affiliate link to AS for your product.
These groups have thousands of members, and hundreds of highly engaged people who are buying a lot of software on AS.
If you can't sell your AS deal to the people who are actively purchasing AS deals, then there's something inherently wrong about the market (appsumo-lings) 2M strong online business owners, operators. If you can't sell to them, as a LTD, then you'll need to iterate your market or pivot your positioning a lot. Which is totally reasonable. For example many SEO agencies, freelancers, teachers are on AppSumo buying software. But not many head chefs at fine dining establishments. This is just an example. 2 Million on their emails lists seems like a HUGE number, but there's Billions of internet users.
hope this helps.
Hi @AndrewKamphey!
You have an amazing advise!
I'll give it a try asap. Can you share your favourite groups?
Yep! The affiliate is a sales engine😅
Does affiliate work manually or I should join any affiliate platform?
the affiliate links others make money off of are the appsumo affiliate program. you want them to post with their links.. so they make money, and you get sales.
I do have my own personal favorite groups but unfortunately you'll have to do the work and find your own favorite ones. I'd just recommend engaging with the admins, and seeking out what's working for each group (if anything) some groups are desolate, promotional balls of fluff. Some groups have great communities who will like what you're doing and like you if you provide great customer service.
If you choose to promote and leave, then you'll get some hate. I've seen it happen. It's just been my own personal choice to engage, and try to be helpful while I also promote my work.
First - thanks for such a huge tips. Definitely - the launch gave almost nothing, except putting us on the 20nd pages of their listing by categories..
We will definitely look forward LTD groups and asking for promotion!!
Can you pls tell - it`s better to use their recommended service "Appsumo Partners" partnerreferral.paperform.co/ or try using some other SaaS / service?
Our team will be grateful for your reply!
not sure what you mean by appsumo partners.
you don't have to do affiliate. I would seek out affiliates of appsumo. because it's in their interest to promote you on appsumo.
@AndrewKamphey AppSumo partner is their Partner Referral Program, i believe? when yo promote AppSumo.
So we just need to ask some Affilates to promote MetaSurvey, so that they add their partner suffix to our product page and get their affilate %?
Hey guys! First, congratulations on AS launch! I advise you to post in every social network you have about the launch to drive traffic to the page and get exposure.
About getting on the main page I don`t know, but its weird..
Thanks dude:)
We will send emails and post in social periodically to reach more people. But also I found the days before weekend have a low activity.
after analyzing tens of lifetime deals for my Appsumo Deals Report here are my conclusions:
1) your product needs to be a good fit with AS core audience
the top categories that are generating the most revenue are CRM, Client management, and E-commerce products
2) you need upsells also on your platform

Rytr.me is doing a great job at promoting an upsell after you buy an LTD from Appsumo
3) you have to retain them by building your own community
4) you have to engage them with product updates and case studies
5) launch multiple times
LeadDelta is doing a great job here, they're actually doing a great job at all the above topics, but they've launched 3 or 4 times on ProductHunt, 2 times with their product and at least 2 times some complementary guides
Much thanks @danielpirciu for a detailed recommendations! Actually we are listed in 2 of those popular categories you`ve mentioned: E-commerce and Data & Analytics (the 3d is Marketing)
Can you please describe a in a few words how upsell works?
And do you know how to apply to Tier pricing? Because you can`t add them from a dashboard. AS support manager said, that "those who have tiers passed some validation"
Our team will be grateful for your reply!
@standiz, upselling it's 100% part of your payment processor ... it can be done automatically or manually ... you have to check the documentation, unfortunately, I don't know the technical set-by-step setup
Dude this is fire - congrats.
Thank you for suporting MetaSurvey! We are working on it :)

Thanks for support :)
