How to get your first customer with no following

Getting your first customer is the hardest thing about entrepreneurship

You post youtube videos, tiktoks, articles, run ads, and still get no sales

This is one version of the "Cold Start Problem"

BUT after building two businesses doing $4M+ annually...

I've learned two key hacks that can solve this problem immediately

1: Create a free offer

Giving away something for free is the best way to get a hall pass on all platforms

If you've ever tried posting on Reddit, you know advertising is NOT allowed

BUT if you provide FREE value to the subreddit, you get a free pass

Here's an example reddit post that generated 17k impressions

I offered a free app that generates leads based off Twitter engagement

So come up with a compelling free offer that you can use to gain traction

Could be free design, free website, free tax audit, free seo, free editing pack etc.

And sell to interested users later

2: Steal an audience

You obviously have no following so we must steal an audience from somewhere

Because posting into the void will get you nowhere

In the reddit example above, I took advantage of a subreddit that has 750k members with 1,000 online at any given point

Hijacking an audience from forums or websites is just one way of doing this

There's different ways of doing it on Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube, Linkedin etc.

But I'll share those in a different article

Examples combining the two

Using both hacks at once is where the magic happens

My business partner started our first company by offering our core product for free on reddit

And adding new features as comments would roll in

This got us a few hundred users before we decided on a $12 paywall (this was 10 years ago)

For my 2nd company (a b2b business), we created full staking solutions for the two biggest projects in web3 for free

Combined, those two projects had 300k followers on twitter

So when they shouted us out for creating their new platform, all other projects came to us asking for something similar

Want more actionable strategies?

I've started a free community for those looking to get their first customer

Everything in there is applicable to any business with specifics that you can try today

And new strategies will be shared daily

Hope this helps!
