How to go about pre-order sales for a software product?

I'm currently building a browser extension that will be monetized. I really want to set up pre-orders for this product because I feel like it will be a great way to capture early adopters and validate my idea.

If I set up pre-orders, do I need to have a hard launch date? or can this be an estimate? I'm still working on my product and I'm afraid to run into a blocker that will delay my launch date and users will get mad for the delay.

Is not having an expected launch date okay? I'm sure users will want to know when to expected the product to launch before purchasing the pre-order.

Gumroad is great and easy for that.

Setup a pre-order date, e.g 31st of March. This keeps you honest.

If you need more time, no problem. Send out an email to all preorders that it will take additional time and keep preorders up to date.

If you decide to use Gumroad you can select a launch date and just change it later if you need to
