How to grow users and audience for sharing platform?

I have been building a sharing platform that could only thrive if users start to post, share their work/project and engage with it.

Is finding users & audience different for sharing platform V.S an actual tangible product that sells for money?

What is the best way to go about this and find users , so it can foster a community in a way? I tried posting on product hunt & hacker news, but it seems to not have a huge impact.
