My product watchlimits.com (a chrome extension to help prevent binge/excessive watching) has a companion blog.
A while back I put there a "sign up for newsletter form" from convertkit. The blog gets some traffic, people surely would sign up!
No.
No one signed up, the conversion was 0. Even though the form saw hundreds of visitors.
Why?
I simply think that people weren't sure what would they get in the newsletter and if the content would be worth their time. Unclear value? Move on. People have enough spam in their inboxes.
Ideally, I could give people a clear incentive for signing up. But that takes a lot of work! I will come up with one eventually (I have some digital product ideas or could lock down some articles).
For now I clarified the value proposition:
https://watchlimits.com/blog/newsletter/ by making a newsletter subsite and spelling out exactly what you can get.
Let's see if that works better!
Any tips you can share from your journey? Please add them in the comments!
Thanks for sharing @jdawg. Had a similar experience with a site I've been recently messing around with lately: https://www.tmplar.com/ Which now works OK but no where near the conversion rates I've had on other sites.
I think the times I've been successful at building a large email list people have been signing up for something immediately valuable and joining the list was kind of a value add.
Hi @jdawg ; I've built several sizable newsletter / email lists. My current business has a list of ~105,000 subscribers, and the previous one (2006-2010) had a list of roughly the same size.
Here's what I learned that took my list in 2007 from only the 400 hard-won subscribers I'd acquired in an entire year, to 17,000 people in 3 months :
Nobody.
Wants.
To.
"Subscribe".
To.
Anything. 😂
So the biggest thing you can do to make your numbers jump is to create what internet marketers call a "lead magnet" : some packaged bit of value that provides instantaneous gratification. For instance, a one-page cheatsheet, a checklist, a (short!) PDF ebook, a curated list of your "5 free apps you MUST have to eliminate digital addiction".
And then you offer this lead magnet on your blog, everywhere, and you mention on the sign up form that by requesting this, they will also get your blog articles, best tips, and special offers to help them prevent binge watching and recover control of their time.
This should provide tremendous uplift. Your blog should convert at least 2% to 5% of visitors into signups.

"5 free apps you MUST have to eliminate digital addiction" - this is actually gold, because it's on topic an actually pretty easy to do (relatively). I could totally do it this week!
I guess, I know that lead magnets are good, but I procrastinated on it so far (always other things to do). I MUST try it this week!

People don't find it ironic to watch a youtube video about productivity :).
If it helps you were you want to get it's not a distraction, it's a useful tool. But hey, you don't have to subscribe!
