How to monetize a Chrome Extension with Gumroad?

In this video I explain how to monetize a chrome app:

https://youtu.be/ZPydTFxl7RI

It is especially useful when:

  1. You do not want to expose your custom code to others, including Google

  2. The code would or did not pass the Review by Google

  3. You want to offer your solution as a service

So, this is a novel approach to create a SaaS product based on Gumroad. You can monetize any software. Gumroad offers an api key, so you get monthly recurrent money.

It apply for any type of software. Really, this is a unique approach. Any questions, happy to answer them.

Great insights, Glitchero! Your approach to using Gumroad for monetizing Chrome extensions is innovative and offers a lot of flexibility. I appreciate the emphasis on maintaining control over the code while still providing a valuable service. Looking forward to trying this out!

Ok, so far this system is working. The only issue is that some customers forget to cancel their memerbship and then they want a refund. So, just put a refund policy clear, and also, send reminders to users one or two days before the payment date. Also, I am trying to create two tiers, one free and one paid, so the free tier has few capabilities, and then they can transition to paid tier. Overall, it is kind of working hehe, just follow this advice. hehe. Good luck and happy programming.

Yep, the most important part is that you don't share your code and it is protected. :)

What would you say about security risks?
On Chrome Webstore, they check the code and reject extensions having obfuscated code because it's impossible to know what they are doing under the hood, increasing the security risks. Even after checks from the team, they don't guarantee that the extension is secure, but at least there is a layer of checks, which the Gumroad method doesn't have.

Now I know most people don't know and care much about security risks from software products, but if we start selling extensions through third-party mediums, the risks would be increased. There are also some disadvantages to using the extension in developer mode, compared to proper installation from WebStore.

Interesting. Yes, I also have other extension in the chrome web store hehe, they are free or they use an internal api to hide the code. That's an alternative. But I think using gumroad or lemon squeuzy is a valid approach and it should be explore. It has advantages and disadvantages as everything in life.

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t monetized my extension yet but this could come in handy.

Perfect, yes this is really good. Also, you can do the same with lemon squezzy, because they offer similar solution, but I haven't tried that yet hehe. But gumroad, has a very nice interface.

By Adapting a Chrome Expansion with Gumroad includes making a Gumroad account, setting up your item page with valuing and subtleties, creating a permit key, and incorporating the permit confirmation into your expansion's code. Advance your expansion through different channels to direct people to your Gumroad item page.

@Glitchero And how users adds this "custom" extension? with developer mode?

    1. 1

Yes, they need to activate the developer mode. Which is not difficult.

can you explain point 1 and how gumroad helps with this ?

    1. 2

Hello, you can submit ofuscated code to gumroad. So it is not gumroad, but rather a ofuscator tool that you need before gumroad. Regards, need more info: here is a blog post: https://matchkraft.com/how-to-monetize-a-chrome-extension-using-gumroad-a-step-by-step-guide/
