Financial sacrifice should not be required to work on open source projects. These different business and pricing models are a reasonable way of making sure that people working on open source software get paid for their time and hard work.

So nice to see someone pointing out the obvious! Open source is so valuable and the people working on these projects do deserve to benefit it whatever ways possible. Thanks for the share!

Thanks for sharing Fleur! I got to introduce Armin Ronacher from on stage at WeAreDevelopers and he also had some great things to say on this topic, I particularly thought it was interesting how you can create a commercial open source product with a license that protects your products form competitors but still allows people to use/modify/contribute to it.

I've bookmarked this to come back to it again later. A nice article with some clear suggestions and points for consideration.

I'm glad to see the open source community continuing to grow and find new ways to offer services and products without having to take a financial sacrifice.

For some people working on open source is a creative outlet and they don't want or need anything in return. But for those of us who enjoy it but feel we can't afford to spend our time in that way, these are some good ideas.
