Hey everyone,
I'm reaching an exciting new stage with my platform Frontend Mentor. I'm now in a position where I've validated the core idea behind the platform and can start testing ideas to make it profitable.
Having spoken to many of the people who use the platform, one key insight has been that they would like real show-stopper portfolio pieces to help them in their job hunt.
So I'm planning to start releasing premium challenges alongside the free challenges that the platform offers.
My main question is: how do you prevent (or at least reduce the risk of) people either intentionally or accidentally sharing paid downloads if they're essentially just digital downloads?
One way I plan on doing this is to build so much value into the platform that people will want to buy the challenges there to learn more and get a better experience. But that will take time.
In the early days, people will be simply downloading the files required to build the premium challenges (Sketch design, assets, written content, design system, etc) and then uploading their solution to the platform. It would be very easy for people to share these around and even accidentally upload the Sketch file to GitHub when they submit their solution.
Does anyone here have experience with selling digital downloads successfully? I could well be over-thinking it.
Any advice or thoughts would be welcome.
Thanks!
I sell web components, zip file with CSS and JS files. Adding checks/compression/etc to make sure the product is legit will probably make it less usable. I’ve decided to spend my energy on creating an awesome product and offering great service instead of worrying about pirates.
I offer the code behind a login so to access the latest version you need a valid product key.
Pirates gonna pirate.
Thanks for the input, Rik! Yeah, the more I'm thinking about it the less I'm thinking it's worth worrying about. It's good to have these conversations to help reinforce that mindset!
Hey Matt, I'm with the rest of the commenters here. People stealing your content is a good sign. My product is an extension for Adobe Illustrator, and I sell it as a zip file on Gumroad. fortunately, Gumroad allows me to issue licenses that I can use for verification. This pretty much ensures my product can't be stolen 99% of the time.
Before I created the extension though, the product was just a bundle of scripts, macros, and templates. Anyone could have shared them. I viewed the idea that someone would steal and share it as validation that my product was valuable. There's nothing cooler than seeing your product show up on google with "license crack" queries haha.
If you're worried about Sketch files, you could move your designs to Figma and then just share the developer link with them so they can inspect and download assets, but not actually modify the design or distribute it in any meaningful way.
Haha, yeah that's one way to look at it! My main concern is the fact that it's just a .zip download. People will be sharing the asset files whenever they share their code solutions. So it's definitely the design file that I'm thinking about most. I'll have a look into Figma as that sounds like it could be a good solution. Thanks!
No problem! It's a lot of work to port over designs between platforms. You may want to look into Avocode.

Ah great. Thanks for link!

Yeah, this is along the lines of how I've been thinking about it. First I need to just launch the first premium challenge and then roll with it as and when issues come up. Thanks!
