How loss leader pricing works, how I’ve applied to my business, and how you can apply it in yours

I priced to beat all my competitors, and then slowly built to have a product better than my competitors. Then slowly increased my price. Then again, my prices were so low that even with the price increase, I was still one of the lowest priced products out there.

It pays to have low overheads.

Question - is it unwise to do free to learn from users quickly (like beta testing) and get high quality feedback and then charge afterward?

If you're starting from absolute 0 then you can try that. But the problem is that it's hard to trust if the feedback is really high quality if its coming from free users.

I believe you should start high, even overpriced and then lower it if needed:

    • if people pay a lot, they'll surely inform you about any issues
    • it is way easier to lower the price than to increase it
    • 10 high paying customers are better indicator than 500 free users

But how would you convince people to pay that price for a product that's just starting out, especially if there are well-established players with better prices? I'm guessing a strong selling point through high-demand features that set you apart from competitors?
