How to promote a small sw dev company? Any tips are welcome!

Hi everyone! I'm a junior marketer of a small custom software vendor, and I try really hard to promote it and get leads. However, it's not really happening. I've tried reddit, quora, directory submission, content and email marketing and seo, but with little to no outcome. Would love any info on what else I can do for promotion.

ps. What are your thoughts on marketing automation?

@itexusinc - In reviewing your website, I get the sense your company is trying to be all things to all businesses.

Generally speaking, I've found that a development service that claims they can do many different types of development don't have deep expertise. They are just ok at all of them vs being great at 1-2 of them.

You may want to suggest to your team that you focus on 1-2 of them, change your website to show your authority in those 1-2 services, and put the balance of them in "other services".

I think your challenge is lack of focus, or rather lack of a focused message.

As for how to target prospects:

    1. Take the list of your existing customers (or at least 1-2 of them), find similar businesses, and do a focused outreach, with a clear-specific message. (i.e. We just finished building an iOS app for a business similar to yours, can I have a few minutes of your time, and share with you what we did, and how it helped the business [generate more revenue],[grow their subscriber base],[insert value here]?)

    2. Use LinkedIn to find similar businesses to the ones you served, and see if you can do some focused outreach there.

    3. See if you can find an alternate way to locate businesses that are similar to your existing clients, use LinkedIn (or other directories) to find the stakeholders, see if you can find (or guess) their email, and contact them directly.

I can tell you that as someone who gets pitched stuff all the time (directly, through our corp email, and on LinkedIn), I ignore nearly all of the incoming inquiries.

The more generic the pitch, the more quickly I delete or ignore it.

If you can find an obvious pain point, and you can deliver a clear and concise custom (or mostly personalized) pitch, you may have better luck.

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer! I will definitely use your points while pitching our further strategy.

You can do multiple things such as:-

    1. Find offline businesses around you and contact them, refer to yellowpages.
    2. You will have to get really active on social media.
    3. Try giving demo of your product to small companies?

I would focus more on direct sales. Trying to fetch leads from all the channels, reaching out to them, and work on building out a portfolio first.
