How to promote WordPress plugins?

Guys,

I just started experimenting with WordPress plugins as I think there is a big market for that kind of products. I've build a simple plugin which works enough good on my clients' websites so I decided to go wider and sell it.

I've built a simple website https://wphellopack.com where I am describing a bit the plugin (and another one). Actually I've a few next plugin in mind, just a matter of coding it (I am a programmer, not a problem to develop something new).

The question is: Is that worth of putting a lot of work into building plugins without having an audience like own Facebook group, mailing list or whatever what concentrates my target group? What about referral program? Do you have any experience with that?

I do not want to spend time on something what won't work :-) Too much time I spent on building products that nobody knows about ;-)

All help much appreciated.

Hi, Here is some ideas to promote wordpress plug to unique way.

Make sure the plugin solves a problem and is unique
Add a free version or free plugin add-on to WordPress.org
Create a plugin product page on a dedicated developer website
Post plugin on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+
Create blog content highlighting the plugin and its features
Create video demos showing how to use the plugin
Offer reputable support as a marketable feature
Make sure all content has the correct keywords for the plugin
Reach out to WordPress-specific sites and ask them to post about the plugin
    Start an affiliate marketing program
Get creative and post the plugin to related content and platforms

    Hope this tips helps

Thanks for the check list! An affiliate marketing program is a thing which pops up very often here. I think that's the way to go.

Congrats on having your own plugins!
Even if you don't have your own Facebook group, I still think Facebook groups are amazing for acquiring the first users. The Wordpress community is huge on Facebook, pretty sure you know this.
So, try helping people there and occasionally drop the link of your product :)

Thanks! :-) With FB groups is one problem I noticed. The biggest ones are owned by companies working on... plugins :) and other stuff for using with WP. So, posting there can be banned or just they can pull the plugin into own offer. That risky to get into the mouth of a lion ;-)

Maybe I am wrong, that are just my thoughts, probably I have to verify what I said.

Hey there, fellow WP developer here. You should partner with someone who has existing audience in that space. If you checkout plugins directory on Wordpress you'll notice that majority of most installed plugins are coming from huge teams and companies.

Actually I am thinking about the approach of teaming up with somebody else. This is the way I can focus on building the stuff. And that's the fastest way to earn money by somebody else as I can offer a part of the income from selling the plugins. As I am thinking right now I can even easily generate a coupon code for a seller so that I know who sold the plugin and for whom I need to pay.

      Thanks Ivan for your input!

There are a lot of guys with huge following in WP space, but they don't have experience to build a SaaS. In my case I've contacted few of them, and they were very happy to hear my offer.
Easiest way would be to create some kind of affiliate program and offer them nice commission.

How did you find them? :-)

            Twitter so far.
I am planning to start contacting developers of other WP plugins who're complementary and try to offer them affiliate deal.
