I work for a corp for my day job. After working with a team over a year, my attempts to "fit in" are not gaining any momentum. I am actually contemplating a request-for-transfer to another position in the company. Has anyone ever experienced this, or even heard of it? I'm not seeking anyone to advise me, but just curious to get feedback on how crazy I am or even witness an overwhelming answer stating to just suck it up.
Some context, I relocated for the position. I am a minority on the team, which I think is awesome, but starting to think the feeling is not mutual (it's not any type of "hate", more like a close group that I can't seem to find common ground in order to interact when I need help or try to help others... ). And then there's a feeling of resentment from trying to bring value in different forms like teaching or showcasing demo sessions. I have been trying different approaches to make the work day better, but even if I just stay quiet and work, I get approached about work not being done properly and find out my own team doesn't want to discuss any of it with me and instead an outside person is relaying comments which is just uncomfortable.
This last part was recent, and honestly threw me off. I don't want to quit, and the company is big. I don't like that I even feel the need to write this in a post, but my value doesn't seem to be wanted by those on my team. At the end of the day, I thrive on my value being recognized, and this place has many ways to do that while challenging me.
Maybe I this is normal and I just never noticed this type of environment with previous teams I worked on. But even having to contemplate why there is the feeling of distance from people I need to rely on is really making my head spin.
Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. I'll check on this tomorrow night to see if I'm just being emotional or overthinking this.
And P.S. I decided to discuss this on indie hackers because of my side hustles. Hopefully some of you went though needing a job while trying to build something that can prevent the need of an employer .
Most teams I've worked with, are generous with their (our?) time to new members. We try to help them integrate which is often difficult if the team is pretty small and tight. I've been on teams where we've been seriously understaffed and delivered on very tight deadlines, and then have new members added, which can be difficult for the new team members because we've all been baptised by fire and end up pretty close. But I don't ever recall a team which was openly hostile to a new member. It strikes me that this is a management issue. I'd raise it with the person in charge of the overall team, and if you're not getting the right noises from them, move. Nothing wrong with changing teams. Some companies downright encourage it.
I want to modify my post in that the environment is not "hostile", it is "distant" and lacks communication. The feeling is that I am not welcome, or not "one of them", but prior to this incident, I always just assumed I was too critical on myself (I never treat work as a place to have friendships...) I must sound confusing because it's hard to put into words what happened. Another point is that it's not like I'm "new" or don't have experience. And while I'm considered an introvert, I know how to communicate and never had a problem with someone correcting my work or solution. It just sucks that I can't even think of a way to discuss this with my team because i feel like an idiot that nobody even hinted to me any concerns, so how can I expect any honest feedback? Blah.
