I've been in full-on building & marketing mode for the past 2 months. I'm finding it impossible to detach myself from my projects in the evenings.
Exercise, movies, reading, socialising ... they ain't cutting it these days!
Anybody got a good way of detaching?
TIA
For me prayer helps a lot. It gives a peace and calmness to mind. Maybe you want to try meditation or mindfulness exercises.
Thanks, I've tried meditation on and off for years, but can't get the habit to stick. The wheels keep turning for the entire 20 minutes. I've never given it enough of a chance in fairness. Now could be the ideal time to commit to a daily practice. Great idea!
Hey Dave, I think what you're experiencing isn't actually an issue to do with detaching, it's an issue of handling pressure, deadlines, tasks, etc.
I've usually found that I have a more enjoyable life if I mix socialising into my schedule, but that only works if there aren't any issues within my business or freelancing projects. If there are, then I struggle to shift my focus too.
If I were you, I'd look at how I could improve how I set deadlines and handle issues when they arise. :)
Hey @DaveGeoghegan, it doesn't matter how much we work, there's always going to be MORE work.
I used to work into the evenings a lot, but it never felt like I was getting ahead, and then I started framing my work this way. You could work 20 hours a day and still feel like there's more to do.
I would challenge you to set a hard cut-off time for when to end your work day. Before completely shutting off from work mode, write a list of what you'd like to do the next day.
Keep that list handy through the rest of your evening to jot down any work thoughts that might pop up in the evening. It'll be hard to shut off at first, so writing them down to get them out of your head will be a great first step.
You should try every activity till you get one you like. Some activities need heavy concentration that helps you detach yourself from your everyday thinking. Try everything till you get one you like. For me is gaming with friends!
That's a good point, the activities I try are quite passive. Something deeply immersive and with nothing to do with work in any way is a great suggestion. Cheers!
