BTW if you're looking for ideas (at least a place to start, quickly) -- check out Unvalidated Ideas. I also have some notes in there with research on competitors, leverage-able technologies (that will save you time/money), etc.
On idea validation:
We're all making SaaS products which come out of our own realization that we are constantly running into the same problems over and over again, and we try to turn our personal process for solving these into solutions that can be shared with others.
There are many ways to solve the same problem, and we all have slightly different needs and preferences, so this results in there being different groups of people that like solving the problem in the same way, AKA segments.
I think there is room for multiple SaaS solutions to a common problem. A one size fits all solution which solves everything in general is going to have more trouble satisfying people than solutions which are more tailored to suit a specific segment.
But this leads to a bunch of products all doing similar things, and it can be hard for people to find the right solution for them.
My point is, if there are some good websites for helping people find the right solution, that would be great. I think that would help us all out.
An alternative to a wizard would be if SaaS owners get feedback which is slightly outside their specific vision, maybe we can point those complaints to our own competitors, and hopefully they would do they same for us. Then we aren't really competitors, but rather helping each other and the users. Our products stay simpler, and more focused, and the users find what suits them best and they get listened to more often.
Great article!
Never know about Earlybird, definitely will start using it right now!
