How to use 3D graphics in advertising

Several days ago I made a commercial for automatio.co (No-Code Web Automation & Data Extraction Tool that helps people to automate their routine actions and to build a bot) and I want to share with you useful information about the use of 3D graphics in advertising.

And here is the work that I made for them: https://www.behance.net/gallery/130974019/Automatio-CG-Commercial

So, first of all, all digital advertising can be divided into two types:

  • Performance digital is advertising that is aimed at generating sales. Here we bring our rational advantages.
  • Awareness digital is advertising that aims to build brand knowledge. Here we evoke emotions, this is a more image-oriented topic.

Performance advertising generates us a short-term increase in sales, but brand awareness does not change. Because of this, there will be no increase in sales in the long term. While advertising is spinning, the product is being sold, and as soon as we turn it off, then sales will disappear.

While Awareness advertising works on an emotional level, its goal is not to sell to the consumer at the moment but to be remembered and get into the head of the client, which will stimulate sales growth in the long run even without advertising

So 3D advertising or 3D Motion Design refers more to Awareness advertising and it helps to create deferred demand. For example, a consumer watched an advertisement for a new Macbook Pro, but bought it a year later.

This process takes place in 4 stages:
• Research & Development
• Blockout
• Layout
• Render

  1. Research & Development or in other words Art-Direction — at this stage, you need to create a moodboard of your future video, collect as many examples as possible that are somehow related to your ideas. And create the first storyboard of your video, which may look like sketches.

  2. Then you can proceed to the second stage of Blockout — where simple objects like a sphere or a cube need to show how the main character or product will be positioned in the frame, as well as what movement the camera will have. At this stage, animations, textures and 3d models should be specially simple so that it is easy to make edits and new ideas.

  3. Layout - here you need to finalize the animation, make it smooth and start adding textures, light and simulations. Also make edits, if there were any. And the video is getting closer to a more final look.

  4. The last stage of Render — here you need to finalize the light, textures, simulations and send all the frames for processing, it takes an average of 7 days. After the processing is completed, you can present the finished version of the video.

In the end, you can get stilshots (i.e. static images) which can also be used for banner advertising or as posts on social networks.

That's it, this is how the process of creating motion design advertising looks like. Thank you all and stay in touch!
