The other day when Smash Notes got listed on Product Hunt, I realized that PH was not using their source-tracking correctly. If a visitors to Smash Notes clicked on the "upvote on PH" badge, then PH would only know that visitor had come from the badge, but not which of the many products. They would not know if the traffic was coming from a badge posted today by the top product, or one posted two years ago, by the product which came in the 10th place.
I realized that if even Product Hunt team was using UTM parameters incorrectly, it is possible a lot more people were making the same mistake, so I wrote a very quick guide on how to use UTM to grow your audience.
It's really simple, all you have to do is add the parameters to the urls you share, and then keep an eye on your analytics.
Take a look, let me know if you have a question, and I'd happily append them to the guide! Hope this helps.
I'm a UTM nerd myself. Drives me crazy when "successful" organizations don't utilize them properly.
Good, succinct stuff. IHers would do well to consistently deploy UTM parameters, and save them somewhere, so that the same ones get reused.
Sweet write up. Add where the terms UTM come from and its gold.
Thanks! Added to the footer.
Funny side note, my first ever blog post that trended on Hacker News was about John Crosby, uncle (I think?) of one of the co-founders of Urchin Software. I believe he was a minor investor too.
