Every startup wants to be a monopoly lately, but the reality is that very few have a truly differentiated product. Uber is really the same as Lyft, Airbnb is not that different from VRBO/HomeAway (including many of the same listings), and Stripe was not the first payment processing API. When your product is easily interchangeable or substituted by the competition, it's easy to feel that the way to win is just lower your prices- and indeed many of these companies do compete heavily on price.
