How We Bootstrapped Rocket Remit into One of Australia’s Fastest-Growing Fintechs

When we launched Rocket Remit, we weren’t trying to reinvent global finance—we just wanted to solve a painful problem. Back in 2010, sending money from Australia to countries like the Philippines, Nepal, or Fiji was slow, expensive, and full of uncertainty. Transfers took days, hidden fees piled up, and the customer experience was an afterthought. We knew there had to be a better way.

So we built one.

Rocket Remit started as a small team of technologists and immigrants with firsthand experience of these challenges. We combined our technical knowledge with local market insights and created one of Australia’s first mobile-money-only international transfer services. Our mission was clear: make sending money abroad as fast, easy, and fair as sending a text.

Bootstrapping from Day One

We didn’t raise money. Instead, we bootstrapped carefully—testing markets, investing in our own infrastructure, and growing through customer trust and word of mouth. In the early days, we focused on a few key corridors, particularly the Philippines and Pacific Islands. Mobile money was already gaining traction in those regions, so we built a tech stack optimised for instant delivery into mobile wallets.

Our early wins came from one thing: speed. Most of our transfers are completed in less than 10 seconds, even today. And because we cut out middlemen, our fees stayed low. People noticed—and they told their friends.

Building for the Underserved

We’re proud to have grown organically by serving migrant workers, international students, and expats who send money home regularly. For many of our users, every dollar counts. We’ve never lost sight of that. While big banks and legacy providers focused on high-margin corridors, we doubled down on places like Tonga, Samoa, Kenya, and Bangladesh.

Today, Rocket Remit supports mobile money transfers to over 40 countries, and we’ve built integrations with more than 300 mobile wallet providers around the world.

The Next Chapter: Expanding to New Zealand

In 2025, we quietly launched Rocket Remit in New Zealand. The same problem exists there: a growing migrant population sending money to underserved countries, using outdated tools. So we brought our platform across the Tasman. It’s early days, but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Lessons Learned

  • Solve a real problem that you understand deeply. Rocket Remit was born from personal experience.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of speed. Fast transfers = trust.

  • Bootstrap with purpose. Not having outside pressure gave us the freedom to build a product people actually wanted.

  • Be obsessed with customer support. Especially in fintech, trust is everything.

Final Thoughts

Rocket Remit isn’t a unicorn, and that’s okay. We’re a profitable, growing fintech that has processed millions of dollars in remittances for people who need it most. Our growth has come not from flashy ads but from real customer love and trust.

If you’re building something for an overlooked market—lean into it. That’s where real impact lives.

Impressive to see Rocket Remit scaling in the remittance space! Having worked on mobile fintech apps, one key takeaway is the importance of user trust and simplicity. In regions with high remittance activity, users often prioritize reliability and ease of use over advanced features. Ensuring a seamless onboarding process and transparent fee structures can significantly enhance user retention.

Additionally, integrating local payment methods and understanding regional compliance requirements are crucial for expanding into new markets. It's also beneficial to continuously gather user feedback to iterate on the app's features and address any pain points promptly.

Looking forward to seeing how Rocket Remit continues to evolve and serve its users.

Great to see a fintech app tackling international remittances! A couple of things I’ve noticed working on mobile apps in this space:

    1. UX/UI tailored to different cultural contexts is key — what works in one market might not in another, especially around design preferences and onboarding flows.

    2. Performance and reliability are critical, especially during peak transaction times. Even small delays can impact user trust.

    3. Security measures like biometric auth and multi-factor authentication can make a big difference in user confidence.

Would be interesting to hear how you’re approaching these challenges!

Bootstrap to fintech success - this is pure gold!

Currently bootstrapping AlbumForge (first photo software with a soul) and your growth trajectory gives me hope.

We're taking a similar path: solve real problems, build sustainable revenue, scale thoughtfully. Our twist is combining tech with spirituality - I code after meditation each morning.

Question: What was your biggest mindset shift from startup to scale-up? And how did you maintain company culture during rapid growth?
