How We Built a Long-Running Educational Website by Focusing on Free Value First

For years I’ve been intrigued by one simple question:

How can a small independent publisher build a sustainable online business without aggressive advertising, paid acquisition or venture capital?

In our case, at least, the answer has been yes.

We run Kids World Fun, an educational platform for children, parents and teachers. The site started as a simple content project but gradually grew into a large collection of educational resources including short stories, worksheets, learning activity, English learning resources and animated content

What surprised me most is that some of our biggest growth opportunities did not come from “growth hacking,” but from consistently publishing genuinely useful content.# The Early Problem: Nobody Knows Your Website Is There

Like many indie founders, we first thought:

“If the content is good, people will come themselves.”

That was not the case.

Even high-quality educational content is a failure without:

  • search visibility

  • backlinks

  • topical authority

  • trust indicators

  • consistency of content

The first big breakthrough was when we began to organize content around very specific educational search intent instead of publishing random articles.

For example:

  • moral stories for kids

  • printables worksheets

  • English learning activities

  • kids entertainment with educational values

One section that did especially well over time was our collection of free short stories for kids

This taught us a crucial SEO lesson:

Specific usefulness beats broad publishing.

Building Topical Authority, Not Viral Content

Many indie makers are chasing viral spikes.

Educational publishing is another matter.

Teachers, parents and students search everyday consistently. The traffic might not explode overnight, but useful educational pages can grow for years.

Instead of aiming for “viral” content, we tried to build clusters around:

  • reading

  • story telling

  • English learning

  • educational entertainment

  • print activities

This helped us identify users who were seeking safe and educational options to random entertainment content on the web.

Over the course of time, Google started to recognize the general educational topic of the site.

That compounding effect became so much more powerful than any short-term traffic trick.

What Worked Better Than Paid Marketing

Over the years we tried all kinds of promotional strategies but 3 things consistently beat out all others:

1. Evergreen Contents

Education content ages slowly.

A good article or worksheet can keep bringing in traffic for years with a few minor updates.

Evergreen educational resources build cumulative authority, unlike trend-based content.##

2. Internal Linking

Smart internal linking is an underrated SEO edge for content-heavy sites.

For example, users reading stories might later find:

  • vocabulary pages

  • worksheets

  • grammar references

  • tests

  • edutainment games

This enhances:

  • session length

  • depth of crawl

  • topical understanding

3. Confidence of Audience

Parents and teachers are cautious about what they recommend to children.

That means trust matters more than slick design or aggressive monetization.

We saw that doing what was best for a clean and useful experience led to better long-term growth than trying to maximize short-term advertising revenue.

Our goal is to make learning materials more fun and accessible for children all over the world.

Lessons for Indie Hackers Who Build Content Businesses

A few things I wish I understood earlier:

Don’t Underestimate Boring Niches

Education may not be sexy like AI tools or SaaS launches but steady evergreen demand is unbelievably powerful.

Small Compounding Improvements Count

Improvements:

  • page speed

  • structure of content

  • readability

  • mobile experience

  • internal linking

…frequently produced better results than producing large quantities of new content.

SEO Is Slow but More Resilient

Organic traffic is a frustrating thing at first, because the growth feels invisible.

But compounded search traffic over time becomes one of the most defensible assets for a content business.

Summary

One thing I like about the Indie Hackers community is that it is about building sustainable businesses, not vanity metrics.

Our project was never a “fast growing startup”.

It was increased by:

  • uniformity

  • niche focus

  • search intent alignment

  • credibility of audience

  • long-term publishing

And honestly, I think there’s still huge opportunity in educational publishing for indie founders who are willing to play the long game.
