How we built an AI copilot for freelancers tired of wasting Upwork Connects

For months, we noticed the same problem on Upwork:

Freelancers were losing money before even getting clients.

Not because they lacked skill —
but because they were:

  • Applying to overcrowded jobs
  • Sending generic proposals
  • Targeting low-quality clients
  • Wasting Connects on low-probability opportunities

So we built AiLancerX.

It’s a Chrome extension that helps freelancers:
✅ Analyze job quality
✅ Detect risky clients
✅ Generate strategic proposals
✅ Answer additional questions faster

The goal wasn’t to automate freelancing.

The goal was to help freelancers make smarter decisions before applying.

Today we launched on Product Hunt. 🚀

A few things we learned while building:

  • Freelancers care more about ROI than AI hype
  • Proposal quality matters less than job selection
  • Speed + personalization together are powerful
  • Users love tools that save Connects

Would genuinely love feedback from Indie Hackers builders and freelancers.

The interesting part here is that you are solving the mistake before the proposal is written.

A lot of freelancer AI tools start too late. They help generate a better pitch for a job that may not have been worth applying to in the first place. Your stronger wedge is helping freelancers protect their Connects, filter weak clients, and only spend effort where the odds are better.

That feels more like an application decision layer than a proposal assistant.

The only thing I’d be careful with is letting AiLancerX make the product sound like another AI-for-freelancers extension. The product sounds more useful than that. If you ever want the brand to feel bigger than Upwork proposals, something cleaner like Xevoa.com would carry the workflow/decision side better without boxing it into the AI tool pile.

The core promise is strong: fewer wasted applications, better client selection, better odds before the freelancer spends anything.
