Hey indie hackers!
This night we launched PeerBoard, our plug and play community platform, on product hunt. And while it may be a bit too early to jump to conclusions, I'd like to share some tips and tricks that helped us to get to #1, at least for now.
A bit more about PeerBoard. It's a discussion board engine built for the modern age and with a heavy focus on integrations with different CMSes and developer environments. We have our WordPress plugin and components for react/angular/node (more to come) - so you can put your discussion board right on your website, under the same login system, navigation, etc. And this way it becomes a natural part of your product with minimal friction to use.
It took us 11 months to get here, we bootstrapped and then raised a small pre-seed. Our team is mostly engineering now, focusing on core product and integrations. We love working with new partners so if you want to give it a try, just check https://peerboard.com and feel free to reach out to me directly in case of any questions or feedback (I'm @vernon99 both on Twitter and in Telegram).
To prepare for our Product Hunt launch, we did a few things in advance:
On the day of launch we:
Generally speaking, the best way is to start giving value to a large group of people as early as you can. So when you get back to them for help later, they have some appreciation of your work. I realize it's a chicken and egg problem - you launch on PH to get early adopters and it helps if you already have them :)
Check out PeerBoard on Product Hunt and let me know if you have any questions or feedback!
A quick update from the next day: we lost our position and ended up being #4 for that day. Also got dragged into bot wars: at some point we got 500 random upvotes out of the blue (not from our efforts), got penalized for that and took me to write Ryan to recover our position. 3 other submissions accelerated their pace a lot by the end of the day, we know for sure that 2 of them were using bots. Product Hunt is a war zone on Tuesdays, be aware.
Glad to have played a small role in helping you launch on Product Hunt. Good luck!
@kevinwilliamdavid
Your acts on hunting startups to help them grow is truly inspiring.
I have seen how some of products you hunted and how the early boost on PH made a difference in the journey. being a reason behind it should be really fulfilling.
Moreover, Product hunt's algorithm perfectly complements your intentions and rewarding..
Keep hunting.. Keep inspiring! 😊
Thanks Kevin, we appreciate it!
very interesting about the bots. love how you called PH a warzone. We launched the day before you.
That's crazy about the bot wars. Thanks for the details and the useful link to PreviewHunt 👍🏽
Well done. That's a fine achievement.
🙏 Thanks for sharing! I didn’t know about Preview Hunt, have been looking for something like this!

Congrats and thanks for sharing. I'm in a public alpha stage for my own product Guildflow and so far have avoided Product Hunt as I don't feel like I'm ready yet -- but it's on my radar for the future.
Yeah, it's a tough balance to find the right point in time to launch there. Our thinking was: a) make sure the product is stable - we screwed this one btw, but learned it through the feedback which is useful, b) make sure you have tracking in place to at least use the conversion data to your benefit. We have Google Analytics for the landing page, Amplitude for complete funnel tracking (landing -> user maturity). After that you at least will get valuable data and potentially some registrations from the launch.
Congrats! And thank you for sharing your PH process with us. Bookmarking this one :)
Sure, happy to be of help!
Congratulations on the successful launch! Can you tell a little more about the impact of Ship in concrete numbers?
E.g. how many people subscribed over time (and what did you have to do for that)? More stats, like how many of them upvoted or have seen the launch on PH, etc. ?
We had several hundred people in Ship (close to 1k, I think) and we got them mostly by messaging people in our 1st circles through Linkedin Helper plugin and tools like that, to automate the 1:1 outreach.
Thanks for the case study! It's always interesting to see the different approaches people have to PH.
I was wondering, did you read a lot of 'this is how you get #1 on PH' articles?
And what was your goal with the PH launch? Simply get customers (and if so, was it successful)?
The goal was to get more exposure to small and medium sized companies. I think we achieved that, at least to some degree. Hard to say how these free/trial registrations will convert to revenue yet, the time will tell. One large source of information for us was the original PH guide: https://blog.producthunt.com/how-to-launch-on-product-hunt-7c1843e06399
Cool, thanks for the answer. And congrats on getting to #4 for that day, which is still a great achievement!
Did you use the paid ship feature, or the free tier?
Free, haven't tried paid
