I’m really tired of those articles giving out free promotion tips because most of them are just full of nonsense.
They say things like "Send out emails" or "Try affiliate marketing". But honestly, those tips are too vague and not practical. Where do you even find email addresses for newsletters, and how do you start an affiliate program?
So let’s switch things up I’ll just tell you what we did at Letterly and how many people actually downloaded the app.
But first, let me make something clear:
The spike when we launched happened because the App Store likes to show off new apps to see how they do. Plus, we told our friends and shared the news on social media. After that, downloads settled down to around 10–20 a day, mostly from people finding us in the app store.
You can promote stuff on Hacker News in two ways:
Peak day result: 55 installs.
You can get a lot of views by posting on Reddit. I posted in the subreddits r/Entrepreneur and r/SideProject.
The tricky part about Reddit is that you have to be active and popular to get noticed. That means you have to post and comment a lot without just talking about your own stuff.
But for us, Reddit didn’t bring in many installs:
Peak day result: 26 installs.
We launched Letterly on Product Hunt and got to be the top product of the day by planning ahead and getting lots of support.
And it really paid off. Here’s what happened:
And a good chunk of those people who downloaded the app later paid for it.
This is a tough one since they pick who they talk about. But after getting to #1 on Product Hunt, some AI newsletters started noticing us.
One big one was Superhuman. It helped keep the buzz going from Product Hunt:
Peak day result: 168 installs.
We stumbled upon this one. It’s a platform where you can launch your app before it’s fully ready. You can send out a Testflight link or a landing page or just a survey (which is what we did).
People like it because they get to try new stuff early.
There are people there! I recommend Betabound for building up an email list of early users.
Result: 300+ emails
We couldn’t track how many of them actually downloaded the app, but we got feedback and noticed more downloads on the days we sent out emails.
You might have seen those lists of "9999+ app directories".
Well, they didn’t do well for us. Practically none of them made a difference.
Result: Nope
Betalist is kind of like Product Hunt but smaller. We didn’t see any big bumps from posting there. To put it in perspective, we got 670 people from Product Hunt and just 53 from Betalist.
So, you could give it a shot for the sake of a few dozen people, but don’t expect much.
Result: Barely noticed
We’ve still got lots of other things to try. I hope what we’ve done helps you figure out where to put your time and effort.
I wrote this article in a flash with the Letterly app I just talked about. I jotted down my thoughts and got a draft, then added details later.
Good luck with your startup!
Thank you for sharing! I find the numbers provided especially useful to get a perspective on the effectiveness of each channel.
Did you put a lot of effort in deciding at which time should you launch on each channel (morning, evening, etc)?
You're welcome! Honestly no, we didn't think about it much
thanks for sharing
You're welcome! :)
Saw free and couldnt click fast enough :D
What a great read!
Thanks :)
Thank you very much for recording each stage of the attempts and sharing them as articles. I learned a lot!
You're welcome :)
Thanks for sharing. Good stuff. Was wondering how you made it to the top of Product Hunt. Obviously a great product is needed but did you gamify anything in the product hunt launch part?
It wasn't a rocket science :) Described it here: https://x.com/ilestilfat/status/1753432681105309969
Thanks for sharing
You're welcome :)
This is beautiful and a nice way to promote your site <3, honestly. I still find it hard navigating Hacker News. So archaic!
I think that's the idea of HN and they don't change it intentionally
Yeah, I guess
Thanks -- this is a good roundup of the initial places to get your name out there... We did most of these for BuyReddit
You're welcome! Did you try something else what was more effective?
Thanks for sharing. I had never heard of Betabound but definitely going to check it out.
Yeah, check it! It looks old, but it works!
Very cool and thanks for sharing! This is especially useful for me as I'm also marketing an AI product. Never heard of Betabound, so definitely going to check that out.
Yeah, try it, I recommend! :)
This was awesome! I've never heard of Betabound and am in the process of trying to test launch my own product. Will be trying this out for sure! Thank you!
You're welcome! Don't forget to try Letterly too :D
That's really great AI marketing case study!
Thank you :)
Really informative, thanks for sharing
You're welcome! :)
Thanks for your sharing ideal .
No problem at all, you're welcome :)
I've got an AI product so this is really good information, thanks!
Happy to hear that! You're welcome :)
Thank you for sharing your learnings!
Hey, thanks for sharing useful summary. Betabound is a new one for me, I will definitely check it out.
Question about this Product Hunt e-mail that got you 330 downloads. Is it the “Top launches you missed” email that they sent?
You’re welcome!
No, it’s just their daily newsletter where there is a block called “Yesterday's Top Products”. Letterly was the first one there on Monday
Got it, thanks! And congrats on your growth
A good product also needs extensive promotion. Stay active across various social media platforms to keep your accounts engaged. Thanks for sharing.
Did Directories Listing help you go up on SEO ranking because of backlinks?
Show HN post is taken down?
All I see on the page is "Sorry" - https://cln.sh/6tgS82DJ
Nice tips! Good luck to you!
Thank you :)
Thank you for the insightful article, beautifully broken down to make it easily digestible. I'm curious to know what end-user has made the most use of your product in order to consider how one is able to target them directly.
Thank you for your kind words!
But honestly I didn't get your question :(
No problem, ILFAT. My suggestion is to analyze your current user base to identify who uses the app the most. Look for any patterns or categories within these users. The more detailed your user segmentation, the better you'll be able to develop strategies to target similar users effectively. A small base of regular users will advocate for your app, and beyond the general value of market segmentation, this will be particularly valuable to you since a lot of the amazing traction you've gained has come from 'similar' communities in the tech space.
Based on your article, it appears that many of your downloads came from startup/tech communities such as Hacker News, Reddit, and Product Hunt. While this has given you visibility, it's possible that many downloads are from other startup founders and tech enthusiasts who are interested in your project rather than as regular users. Identifying and targeting those who use your app consistently can help you build a loyal user base that actively engages with and promotes your app.
