How would you approach growth for this product?

Hello all, hope you're doing well. My name is Carlos and I am leading the build of Shelf.

Shelf is an asset tagging and tracking infrastructure. (Physical assets - AKA: things).

How did we get here? We know of 2 completely unrelated companies (one in the cleaning business, another in the ship building business ) that asked us to build a similar system. We convinced them to rather get a subscription on Shelf as we build it - instead of investing and running the whole system themselves.

That worked and we are building the MVP - we also - picked to go Open Source for the code as we love the idea of organisations running their own Shelf installations on their own premises (some organisations/companies assets are quite sensitive and I can totally understand they dont want them running on shared servers).

Now, here is the question.

We convinced two companies to hop on Shelf ecosystem, they approved the scope of the MVP and are launching customers.

However, how would you go around getting more interest for the tool? Contacting other companies in the same niche? Without a case study?

Should we run ads to those niches to get them to see demos and ideally sign intention - to - use - the - tool agreements?

Or would you run broad, benefit driven traffic ads to a landing page to see what sort of interest there is for the tool?

Not sure if it is worth 'niching' down at this moment. As we do not even know which niche to pick.

As you can already read, confusion is all around us for now. We will end up finding a good angle, but I am interested in the perspectives of the Indie hacker community!

Hey Carlos, nice work on Shelf! I'd suggest you start a blog right away. Focus on common pain points and share valuable content online. Optimize for SEO. Specially longtail KWs, since they are way less competitive.
While you wait for the organic algorithm to pick up, use this content on Google Ads on a DSA campaign (and maybe try Meta ads too) with a low target CPC/CPA. It's low maintenance and can start bringing your first users, so you can gather feedback and iterate over your content and product.

    Cheers!

Hi Carlos, congratulations on getting two companies onboard as launching customers for Shelf!

One option could be to definitely focus on contacting other companies in the same niche as your launching customers. You could reach out to them directly, showcasing the benefits of Shelf and how it can address their specific pain points. Case studies can be helpful, but if you don't have any yet, you could offer demos or free trials to generate interest and showcase the value of your tool.

And while running ads to certain niche is fine alternatively you could also run broader ads that focus on the overall benefits of using an asset tagging and tracking infrastructure, without narrowing down to a specific niche. This could help you gauge interest from different industries and identify potential niches that show more traction.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your perspective.

At the moment we have a CTA on our site that reads 'Request beta access' however, I am considering to changing it to 'Get a free demo'. I am curious if my submission rates will go up.

With Ads, I ran a few over the weekend and got around 99% traffic from India with very shady usage patterns.

Will switch to broad, but target US to see if there is interest there.

      Thanks SaaSAnalyser!
