How would you grow Indie Hackers?
by
Rosie Sherry
For a bit of fun, if Indie Hackers was your 'baby', what would you do to grow it?
It depends what you mean by grow??
More members, or
More conversations, or
More content, or
More revenue, or
More success, or
...???
Yeah I agree, a mobile app would be great and podcasting would be a great feature also.
An indie hacker is building a mobile app - https://www.indiehackers.com/product/moon
🙏🙏
More than a mobile app, a decent mobile version of the website would be great!
Hey there! If you’re on iOS and would like to join the beta for my IH mobile app, let me know!
Yes please!
Hey Paul just wondering if you got the TestFlight invite for IH app beta. It may have gone to your spam if not. Let me know if you want me to resend!
Omg sorry, can you shoot the request to my rhodesie@hotmail.com account instead?
No worries! Just sent the invite to the new email 👍
Sweet! Just sent an invite to the email in your IH profile! Let me know your thoughts/requests! 🙏
Get BuSo and ex Wicked Fire in here!
Feeling old!
Yeah, it will never happen. IH is a completely different pair of shoes.
You're right, and it's probably for the best. Just imagine podcasts with some of those guys...
I'd do group office hours where you auto-match people every week into group video chats where people can help each other with problems, ask for advice, etc. Basically, exactly what startupschool.org does.
What about Virtual Meets?
Nice hadn’t seen that! If usage of virtual meets keep growing maybe worth thinking about an auto matching feature and letting people signup for a weekly meet. That said, I think one of the reasons startupschool works so well is there’s some real pressure not to miss a group session. Without that, maybe self organized is best.
Yeah, I see the Virtual Meets as an MVP community idea. If it gains enough traction then maybe I can convince Courtland to code some proper things around it.
Hey Shawn! If you’re on iOS and want to join the beta for my IH mobile app let me know!
Yeah absolutely. Here’s my email shayanjavadi1375@gmail.com
Awesome. Invite sent! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts/requests/feedback! You can email me, dm me or Moon on Twitter, or comment right on this notion board 👍
Seems like you have huge on-boarding problem..
I started participating 2 weeks ago and getting 5-10 newbie 'followers' per day, but when I checked what they are doing, it turns out they are actually not doing anything... After signup your new users either lurk or vanish, but they don't start participating in the community.
That's true, I also get maybe 5 or 6 followers daily, and as you say they don't do nothing...or have no social media.
I would turn IH as an invitation mode only.
This could be an awesome feature. I always thought the followers are just spammers...
Just for a contrary view - I haven't posted anything yet, or started working on a particular project (last side-project was 2015), but I do intend to do both in the coming year. In the meantime, I find the discussion and commentary on IH both educational and inspirational. I do hope you'll continue to allow people like me access.
It's not normal for people to post straight away, in communities in general. Typically most people will join and lurk for a while before participating, if they even participate at all.
There's a general rule of thumb out there in the community world that 90% of people tend to lurk in communities and only the top 1% are super active people. I don't know how true that holds for the world today.
I do know that 15% of people who do sign up post something within 24 hours. I'm not sure how that really compares to others.
We do have a spam problem, which is 'annoying'. I manually clean a lot of it up.
Thanks for making your first post @pluglet :)
I just had a thought, it'd be nice if there were ways to search through the product listing. I'm thinking of 2 use cases:
1.) I need to achieve X and I want to support Indie Hackers so I will come here first and search the list of products to see if something can do X for me.
2.) I have an idea and I want to see if any Indie Hackers are already working on it.
Maybe the ability to add key words/tags to products to keep everything neat and within "categories".
Hope that helps,
I'd focus on two things:
How would you facilitate user-to-user engagement? Could you give an example of what things you are thinking of?
For me, it would be direct messaging between users! It’s kind of annoying to have to have a threaded conversation in the comments of a post, or to have to email the user outside of IH.
I haven’t given much thought to the how ( sorry ), but those are the two outcomes I’d be experimenting towards if I were to give the how some thought. ; )
Bit scattered, but I think more YouTube is a bit of an untapped atm:
We've had “office hours” before. And I think it worked well. But I think it can be more of a thing. Like a big thing. Same time, every week. And livestream it to YouTube. So you could sort of just binge watch it casually. Maybe even try 2 / week. 5 people. 1 Indie Hacker / expert. Would bring the forum to life a bit more. Or I'd even ask every person who does an AMA / Podcast do also do a YouTube livestream Q and A. You could call it Indie Hackers live or something. And in time even at it to the homepage in the same way the meetups / podcast is ...
Also, I'd take the best 30 seconds from each podcast and share on social media. More lively than just a twitter card (although Courtland's new threads are also great).
And finally, the podcast is amazing and has had some huge guests. But I'd invest even more time in pulling in some giants. Have a hit list of the ten people you'd most like to get on the podcast in the world. And then think creatively how to bring them on.
One podcast with the right person, can take you into a whole new stratosphere. Look at Joe Rogan and Elon Musk ... It opened the floodgates. So I'd allocate a small % of time to this.
Better Interviews/Podcasts. It feels like all the content goes through a standard set of questions. There is no real discussion, critique, etc. At some point, it all comes down to what the interviewee decides to communicate, and not on the interviewer asking the proper questions/follow ups, etc.
More "Official" content, like intervies, Faqs, Journeys
