How would you grow this?

This is an opportunity to get and give help in growing (your) indie hacker products.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Post a link to a project and provide a few words of what you have been doing to grow your product. It would be helpful to include challenges you've had and what has or hasn't worked.
  • Because this community is about giving back too, please comment on someone else's post with support and ideas.

Over to you!

    Project: https://versoly.com/

SaaS focused landing page and website builder

    How would you increase conversions?

    1. 2

hey @volkandkaya ! super interesting product. I'm a designer so will focus on this aspect more. Maybe you can A/B test some of these changes in the landing:

      • Try inverting the main CTA color with the background. (white bg and blue CTA?). also, bump up the size and highlight that it's free.
      • Highlight the SaaS benefits compared to other builders. I see some analytics integration so maybe double down on those features in terms of exposure.
      • Add a simple video that shows how easy it is to build.

      Cheers

      1. 1

        Thanks for the advice!

Really need to record a video, it has been on my todo list for ages.

    2. 1

Add some testimonials with data on the time taken from creating account on Versoly to getting first signups to your SaaS through Versoly.

    3. 1

I really like the overall design, the CTA buttons strike me as a "harsh" tone of blue and could use some softening. Gut feel is "in your face" type of message. Otherwise, a few more testimonials would strength the sales pitch.

    4. 1

      super easy and useful. Congrats!

It is easy for me to find free and more designs. So, the alternative is free for me. And I know html etc...

I think you have to get opinion from non-technical entrepreneurs.

      Cheers :)

      1. 1

We have many developers paying :)

Seems to be a few types of developers.

Just depends on how you value your time.

I went with free templates for previous projects, and wasted so much time doing it.

    Track Competitor Product Changes

    How would you grow it?

    1. 2

Move the "10,000 insights found" claim higher in the mix and maybe examples horizontal so less scrolling required to get the idea. Also, maybe not target audience, but 3-4 price tiers would be more flexible and expected.

      1. 1

Great suggestions Vince! I've added these to a Trello board. Thanks for checking it out.

    2. 2

Create resources on product type pages, eg: visual/screenshot collections of pricing pages, landing pages, etc to help inspire people how to create good stuff, then link back to relevant pages.

      1. 2

🙂This is great. It uses data that I already have. And attracts the right people. Product managers and marketers. Appreciate it Rosie!

    Project: http://palabra.io/

We combine your contacts from multiple platforms to help you send personalized emails.

Posting every day on Indie Hackers has been extremely helpful. Getting 2/3 signups daily. My next steps are posting on BetaList and others.

    1. 1

Would love to see a use case and maybe a niche target audience.

I could see it being useful in customer success and sales.

    2. 1

Posting on IndieHackers and Betalist is no organic way to grow your platform and no marketing plan. Longterm you would want to create a machine that brings you traffic all the time.

Who are you building it for? It sounds like a vanilla CRM to me. Used things like this A LOT before and paid for it, for sales, but also customer success outreach. What makes your tool special? Pick a niche, adjust your messaging accordingly ("Send personal emails to your customers with ease"), then send 50 emails with your tool everyday.

There will be more growth opportunities later. Put "Sent with Palabra.io" in the footer for example...

    Project: careermove.io

Learn how people are making successful career moves

    How would you grow this?

    1. 1

First take is "Sign up" instructions could be more prominent (larger, different color, more obvious). Also, the left side/column seems bare to me as if something could be there adding value. Hard to know what is best.

    2. 1

The social media feed on load is a bit of an overload. Maybe show categories first? Make some of your sitemap action buttons on the homepage with some short description?

    3. 1

Very confusing to first enter the site. What is this all about? A header with a clear value proposition is key here. Get emails as soon as possible!

A lot of the content is a little philosophical. To kickstart things, provide the majority of the content how you would want to see it. Push out one interview every other day. Distribute on Reddit, dev.to, freecodecamp, HN. Get as many eyes on each post as you can, and capture emails.

    4. 1

What is a 'career move'? It says to share a career move story, but I'm not sure what that actually is. Then on the right hand side it says to talk about many others things.

Also, more content/people posting things is crucial.

    5. 1

My gut says grow your email list, and it's probably a nice thing to offer a PDF for signing up.

I have an acquaintance that's had a lot of traction by writing a book about how to start consulting on your own instead of being employed, which is kind of a transition.

  5. 3

    Project: https://remoteleaf.com

Mostly using Hackernews and Twitter reaching out/talking about my product.

    How would you grow this?

    1. 1

This seems difficult because (1) having people share it would be great, but it's not in your interest (due to business model, (2) the market is so saturated, the "normal" job seeker won't have a use for this and (3) it's not in the interest of a company to limit their reach to a random set of paid users. Your incentives are not aligned at all, so a lot of pushback on anything you will do.

      My suggestion:

      • Keep the core functionality (remote job aggregation) free, send 10 or so job posts per day
      • Have a premium tier to receive more job posts OR personalized suggestions (only pyhton backend jobs for example)
      • Premium tier either by paying for it, or getting 10 friends to subscribe
      • Grow your free tier aggressively to job seekers, through Reddit and Content
      • Approach remote companies to sponsor posts
    2. 1

I'm curious to hear if you are getting signups. The idea seems cool but I wouldn't pay for something I can get for free everywhere else, especially considering there are so many opportunities for devs out there.

      1. 1

At this point, I do have a 20 paying customers and it's a huge deal to me. I'm trying my best to provide them a good quality service.

The main thing here is there are a lot of development jobs with very little information. We need to go into every job description to see if that particular remote job accepts invitations or looking for the same skill that I have. This is very time-consuming work and we wanna solve this exact problem.

You have tons of time using Remote Leaf. I spend more than 6 hours daily on this along with my day job :)

        1. 1

          That's amazing. Congrats <3

    3. 1

Did you try LinkedIn? Try reaching out there as most of your audience(resources and the people finding resources) are there!
How is it different from other competitors? Like Everleads.

      1. 1

I always wanted to try Linkedin, Thanks to your comment. I now have a company page and posted my first post.

        https://www.linkedin.com/posts/remoteleaf_remote-leaf-hand-picked-remote-jobs-delivered-activity-6625351781926957058-APy2

Looks like Everleads is for freelance gigs and I'm purely focusing on full-time remote jobs.

    4. 1

Interview people who successfully got hired thanks to your platform.
Also maybe interviews with hiring managers at the companies you're listing?

      1. 1

That's a good idea, but I'm just starting out, so not sure if it was useful for somebody that they got a job through our platform.

        1. 1

Okay. Maybe you can find someone who is looking and help them out personally... kind of like a coach. Then keep doing that until you don't have to any longer. :)

          1. 2

Yeah, That's a good idea. As a first step, I can reach out to my customers and maybe I can feature them in my Twitter feed.

    Project: thedjinn.io

Scraping web data every X minutes and making charts out of it.

Whom should I target? I imagine this is a tool that just everyone could use to automate checking for prices, interest etc. but I feel a proper niche is what it needs to take off. Any ideas who might have a routine that would make it especially useful?

I still don't have some features that I think are crucial (like a CSS selector picker or public charts) - or pricing for that matter but the current offering should remain on the free tier. I figured I'd get at least a little feedback on the usage patterns before that - or do you think I should just bolt on some "random" pricing for the sake of having it?

    1. 1

It can be helpful in datascience or finance. I am in favor of having a price tag in any case (even if I do not do it on my project yet, because of lack of time).

  7. 2

https://www.avotoast.app AvoToast is a subscription weight loss app focused on meal planning.

My main trouble is finding new customers that are interested in pay for it. I have a handful I've gotten through word of mouth, but finding a steady stream has been rough. I've been trying to post to Instagram consistently, but haven't had the best luck there yet (so hard to get started with so few followers!).

    1. 1

Have you tried engaging on Facebook groups?
Or giving useful weight loss advice / plans on reddit channels?

      1. 2

Oh, Facebook groups is a really good idea that I hadn't thought of! I should do more redditing, for sure. For one thing, I can easily generate the macros/calories/etc from recipes and what not that are posted, which I think is super useful for everyone. And giving advice is something I've been doing for years, but not there. Thank you!!

Build the integrations you would want to see with this and enable users without coding knowledge to use this (because the ones with coding knowledge are usually bad customers who can build it themselves :) ). Make use of marketplaces from WP, Shopify and similar

      Ideas:

      • Easy Invoice Generator for WooCommerce
      • Brochure Generator for Shopify

Have a free tier that puts 'Made with Docamatic' somewhere, easiest growth hack in the book

    Hi all

I got a free website for digital nomads and especially families.
Goal is to find the spot on earth where all passions and needs of the family are met.

This idea came up as we wanted to find a spot on earth where my kids and wife could do Horse riding, where I could surf in boardshorts and where cost of life was cheaper than France

    So here it is https://www.remote-family.com
I've posted it to several forums, in remote workers group but I don't really get any traction. It seems a lot of digital nomads want to keep on travelling whereas our family more wanted to settle down somewhere for 2/3 years.

My idea to make money out of it is by making local advertisers pay to get in touch with those remote workers

    I'll take any comment/idea to:

    • get more traffic
    • make money out of this work :-)

    Thanks

I would expect to see this on Hackernews and Reddit, maybe reaching out to people talking about CI in PM? Lots of the tech subreddits seem like they have people plugging their tools from time to time.

And just a small FYI, "Funcitonal" is misspelled on your landing page!

      1. 1

Do you put all your stuff on Reddit, PH, HN? If so, how far in were you when you first started?

I'm a bit stressed about submitting my product to sites like PH or HN while still being in the early stages. I don't really want to come across as spam or something and I'm not using these platforms actively.

        1. 1

People might dub your work as spam, it does not necessarly mean it is. From past experience, HN is mostly pseudo-random sucess. You can submit your own post once a month, it will not be flagged as spam.

Your blog looks solid. I think it worth HN or reddit.

        2. 1

I try to! I'm really bad about doing it too, though I know I should. Mine is less tech focused, so I'm more focused on Reddit, and hoping to do PH in the next month or two.

More social proof to give people the confidence that you are legit.

Find conversations to help to contribute to, sometimes people ask here on IH, for example. There are likely other places scattered across the web - entrepreneur Facebook groups, reddit, Hackernews. Even if you don't contribute to the conversations, you could take note of what they are talking about and write some blogs posts to address their questions.

      1. 1

Thanks for the feedback Rosie :)

We actually were thinking of adding our TrustPilot reviews to the site too! We'll get right on that.

  26. 1

Let's try with nohq.co, a site for remote companies to learn best practices.

I would like to maximize email signups by increasing incoming traffic.

    What I'm currently trying:

    • Post regular content with email popup
    • Collaborate with partners to get more exposure on socials
    • Have a toolkit people regularly share
    • Posts on social media every other day or so
    • SEO work
    • Posts on Reddit, HN and co.

    What's coming:

    • A freebie for signing up
    1. 2

Oh, and don’t call it a freebie - that’s what a hobby site might call it. I think you’re more of a serious business than that.

    2. 1

A bit meta, but post more IH milestone updates :)

    3. 1

I can’t see a clear reason to sign up. Your CTA centered around learning but description of newsletter sounds like any other generic weekly email.

That’s my opinion - you could be crushing it on the conversion rates 😄

I think you need to fix your value prop before you focus on driving more traffic and a lead magnet sounds like the way to go. A high quality template for something or an email training / learning series.

  27. 1

    Project: https://www.retrowaveart.xyz

I use Hackernews, reddit, Quora, IH talking about my product.

See if you can get backlinks from posts like "top 10 illustration packs"

Might be able to add to paid image galleries as well.

      1. 1

Backlinking is exactly what I should pay attention to - thanks

    2. 1

Offer free illustrations to some 'influencers', a.k.a product builders and bloggers. Get a reference link if possible. Having a blogger use this in a post could put an illustration of yours in front of 100,000 people. They have a unique style, that's good for you!

Be generous with discounts. Each buyer drives more visibility to you, so give upcoming builders a 50% discounts, it's a no-brainer.

Lastly, freebies! Give away a dozen free illustrations if someone gives you their email. Might lead to some future sales and a great mailing list.

      1. 2

        cool ideas,thanks

  28. 1

    Project: http://www.wpsimplesponsorships.com/

Since it's a WordPress plugin, I rely on the plugin repository search. Mostly twitter and my other website where I use it to accept sponsors. Also, as a Stripe Partner (https://stripe.com/partners/simple-sponsorships) I do get somewhere around 50 views per month on there as well.

I acquired another "Sponsors" plugin with 5k+ active installs where I have a small (not intrusive) box telling them about this plugin as a way to manage the sponsors even better.

I have contacted several podcasts or conferences that use WordPress as their websites if they were interested it giving it a try. The biggest issue here is that most of them have an established system for accepting sponsors (even though it is consisted of several tools) so they don't want to "lose" hours just to see if this works for them or not.

  29. 1

    Project: Monocle Reader

So far I've mostly posted on Hackernews with not much luck except for one or two comments eventually. I've also been sharing milestones and questions here on IndieHackers and I've had a bit of response but not many signups. I've sporadically shared it on Twitter too but I don't have a following so it's been pretty useless.

Last thing I did was a ProductHunt launch yesterday, which only got 1 upvote. I did not share it on social media or anything, I just wanted to see if it got any traction by itself.

I'm now at 600 registered users (1+ years since 'release') but none is consistently using it since there's no payed users after the free trial. I've also tried emailing every signup to ask for feedback but didn't get a single reply back. It's demotivating but I guess the problem is in how I communicate it and the marketing I'm doing. The product is ok-ish, I use it everyday personally so I'm satisfied.

    1. 3

First of all, get away from all these maker platform. No one on IndieHackers or ProductHunt or Hackernews is going to pay for anything. Hard truth.

Next step, where CAN you find customers? That depends on who you are building this for. WHY should somebody use this? The product looks nice, so my ideas:

      • Anyone concerned with their privacy (trackers and such)
      • People with low internet bandwidth (commuters?)
      • People on an e-ink display maybe?
      • People looking to ultra-up their news efficiency, maybe CEOs, VCs and Journalists?

You are marketing to the wrong people. Choose some people you build this for, adjust your landing page to painfully point out the problem this solves, then market where those people are, e.g. out-of-home (subway ads), privacy subreddits or LinkedIn.

      1. 1

Great advice, thanks. I think my target users are people looking to ultra-up their news efficiency, or those that follow a lot of sources too.

Hey, this looks super nice first of all.

      • I would definitely want to see a few examples first. Put a popular one on the website
      • Collect testimonials from your existing subscribers.
      • Give us some social proof, 250 subs is decent and makes you more credible than nothing.
      • Your CTA needs to be much more apparent
      • Give a freebie for signing up, e.g. a PDF of 10 color schemes applied
      • Market to Dribbble, DesignerNews etc.
      • Consider doing content on your site as well, share via Reddit and socials

Seems like CommonNinja would be great for daily deal sites. (AppSumo, StackSocial, Rebeliance)

      1. 1

I wasn’t familiar with those sites. Do you happen to know what’s their pricing model? Do I just need to offer some freebies? Or will it cost to advertise there?

        1. 1

I think AppSumo does lifetime deals and takes a portion of revenue. The others may have different pricing models.

Here's a podcast episode from someone who used AppSumo:

          https://saasclub.io/podcast/saas-startup-appsumo/

          1. 1

            Cool. I’ll look into it.

            Thanks!

            1. 2

              No problem. Hope it helps.

    2. 2

      I would post in Reddit.
      /usefulbesites
      /webdev
      /programming
      /startups

But if you do it don't make it sound like a sales post.

I would approach Indie Hackers, stsrtups, etc,..

      1. 1

Sweet. I didn't think about Reddit at all.
From you experience, did you manage to get valuable feedback there?

        1. 1

It keeps working for me... also DEV.TO is amazing..

          1. 1

But isn’t DEV.TO is more of a developers oriented platform? Posting about my products is relevant if I’m not presenting the technical stuff?

            1. 2

Hey sorry my delay, I was at work. Well, you should take almost the same approach as in Reddit. But you should provide value first, it does not matter technical or not is a product that helps website.

If you search for plugins in dev.to
              ( the search query for plugins ---> https://dev.to/search?q=plugins )
you will see there's many talking about them if you read around you will find out how can you bring in some value...

Edit: I almost forgot, I would definitely redesign the landing page.

God stuff, thanks for the tips! 🙂

And I actually do need some help redesigning my homepage. I’ll contact you privately.

You are very welcome. Absolutely whenever.

I found it hard to understand what platforms this was applicable to. Perhaps make that more obvious? I didn't realise that each product was clickable.

Then maybe some posts with examples of websites that are using your product? Targetting keywords and audiences that use your products. (Wordpress, Wix, etc).

      1. 1

That's a great feedback. Although most of the traffic is going directly to each product (from search).

But I'll definitely add more info and examples in the homepage as well.

    Just started!

    https://podkit.carrd.co/

I'm completely new to Google Ads, but I've put up a campaign so I show up in Google search results. It's not really getting any traffic, with 2 impressions in two days. So I'm probably doing something wrong.

My plan forward is to just cold-email podcasters. If you have a suggestion for how I should choose which podcasters that would be great. :)

    1. 2

Not having a custom domain would put me off.

You also need testimonials and examples.

      1. 1

Thanks for the tips. I'll add testimonials and examples as soon as I get them (or IF I get them 😂).

I feel like buying the domain can come after I've validated, but I do agree that it doesn't help not having one.

    2. 1

Cold emailing is probably great. I suppose there is no product yet? If so:

      • Add examples
      • Add success stories / proof
      • Have a demo
      • Describe how it works, platform?

Other than that, your cold emailing should be on point. Transcribe a section of one of their podcasts for them and send it to them. Has that 'wow' effect. Could even be automated, but don't spam.

Bulk pricing may be a good idea. If it's an automated system $9 per episode is a little steep for what's essentially Google Transcript :)

      1. 1

Hey thanks for inspiring me down in the "concierge style" cold email where I take one of their episodes and give it the treatment. I'm going to try and do that all by hand for a handful of podcasters and see if it generates any response.

Re price: I constantly hear "charge more earlier", so I thought I'd wait until I hear someone complaining before "negotiating against myself". :)

And you're right—there's no product at the moment, but I know all of the parts and can do it "concierge style" just to validate that anyone finds it valuable enough to pay. I'm inspired by how the Endcrawl guys started off with being a completely manual service and only started building the actual automated product once they had validated with actual sales.

    3. 1

I would remove the ads for the sake of UX if you have no traffic is useless and will damage your sites visuals.

Edit: If you orkar, send 100 plus cold emails..it always helps!

I am about to do it too.

      Lycka till !

      1. 1

Hey tack so much, but I don't have ads on the website. It's that I've bought Google Ads so I show up when people search. :)

        1. 1

Jaha !! Ok, my bad. Then I am not the best one to help you...

          1. 2

Well it is lugnt, and tack för skriving anyway!

    Project: https://hypefury.com/

Schedule and automate your Twitter growth and sales

    What we're doing now:

    • Affiliate program
    • Content marketing
    • Creating a webinar so we can teach people how to grow their account if they're new to Twitter
    • Build a Chrome Extension so people can easily schedule tweets from other websites + add some horse power to the Twitter interface

    How would you grow this?

    1. 1

How about looking for people tech blogs with Twitter handles, reach out to them and have them understand how they can use your product to their advantage. In the end I think they'll get to share their story of it worked, even low hanging fruits are celebrities.

      1. 1

On the other hand, I think you guys have a cool product and I would want to be involved.

    2. 1

Oh, the webinar sounds awesome. Maybe expand on that with a live-stream where you at the middle (?) pick one of the viewers on random and apply your teaching to their specific account.

      1. 2

I like the livestream part :) Will add a lot of new viewers because of the exposure probably :)

  34. 1

    Project: Visa requirements site

    Link: https://visarequirements.site/

Find visa free, visa on arrival and visa required countries to visit depending with your passport strength

    How would you grow this?

    1. 1

I would set up google alerts to discover and comment in relevant forums. You could also use Mention to do this on social media. The social media angle would probably be less evergreen.

    2. 1

Youtubers that have travel channels. Reach out to them. They get more visitors.

    3. 1

This seems like a very useful tool, have you tried reaching out to @levelsio as it looks to align very well with Nomad List. For instance I see on Nomad List that Mexico City is listed at Number 1, but I have no idea if my passport allows me to work/visit there.

      1. 1

Awesome! I will try to get in touch with him @iainfreestone
        Thank you

    Project: https://www.regirank.com/
    What I've tried so far:

    • Cold emailing: so far most of the people don't even think they need what RegiRank is offering, maybe I should try to target them even better.
    • Facebook ads: got a lot of new freemium users, not a single one paid.
    • SEO: Too early to tell, the blog only has a few articles and they are bouncing between top 20 and top 50 on google.

Looking forward to get your feedback guys and offer feedback too!

    1. 1

Personally I'd say focus on YouTube.
      Put videos explaining.
Contact other youtubers, ones that teach how to do YouTube and just some others that are known to be responsive...
Youtubers look on YouTube first I would think

      1. 1

Thank you for the suggestion, I will release a video presentation in the following weeks.

    2. 1

Add comments to hotshots on YouTube.

Don't be too "salesy". Just add value to their community

Create your own YouTube channel and a video explaining how it works. If people click through to your profile they'll see it

      1. 1

Thank you for the suggestions, I was thinking to create a video to show how it works, but I never got around to do it.

I like the suggestion of adding comments, I guess I should comment on videos talking about Youtube Alg/Youtube SEO/Apps for youtuber.
However, not sure how should I do that without being too salesy.

    3. 1

If you are getting a lot of new Freemium users from Facebook Ads do you think you might be offering too much for free and there is no incentive for them to move up to Hobbyist? Maybe you could offer 10 keys word for 7 days then this drops to 1 if they do not upgrade

      1. 1

I don't think that is the problem, because most users, after the initial sign up, don't even end up using the app, so it must be something else.

  36. 1

I started https://www.bubblinglab.com/ in December last year so it is still very new.

    What I have tried -

Twitter - I have very few followers so posts seem to go mostly unnoticed
Indie Hackers - Getting lots of good feedback but I don't feel that I am hitting my target audience.
Reddit - Side Project - Very little response.

What I am going to try soon

Blog Posts - to try and drive organic search traffic
Templates - downloadable template users can build upon.

What love to hear your ideas on growing this idea.

    1. 1

I bookmarked this for inspiration, thanks. I'm a developer trying to learn UI stuff. Maybe you could have some free tips on examples, and then charge a fee to get full access to tips, analysis and/or tutorials. Maybe put hover states on the examples that describe how and why certain designs work, even do the same thing for bad designs. There's definitely a market for templates too, but I'd check out your competitors first, like https://themes.getbootstrap.com/

    2. 1

You've correctly identified that you struggle to get messaging to your target audience so when it comes to amplifying a new blog post you'll really struggle.

Hoping for it to rank for organic search results is also a stretch. Your domain authority is very low which makes it very difficult to rank for anything with noticeable search volume. You could go down the route of creating posts that target the lowest volume keywords (think single digits a month) and build enough of a library that the inbound traffic becomes meaningful - but that is a lot of effort for a small reward.

I think offering templates for popular website builders is a great place to start. You can build them and post to the specific product's communities and exchange them for a user's emails. As more and more download the templates, you'll create a mailing list which you can use to amplify your content.

    3. 1

Reddit should give you some traction. Try r/entrepreneur, r/SaaS and r/startups to name a few. But, you need to add more content in order to get users.

    4. 1

Don't focus on your own tweets. Follow people who are in your niche. Add value to the big players timelines. Then people will start to notice you and follow back.

    5. 1

Not sure what is your main goal, are you trying to attract more users to your websites?

      1. 1

Yes thats the main aim at the moment. All content on the site is currently free and am looking to build a steady amount of traffic before potentially adding premium content such a downloadable templates, ebooks etc.

        1. 2

I see, one thing you could do is ask for emails, because some may enter your site, get what they need and then forget about your site.
But if you have their emails, you can send a regular email with the new updates from your site.

Another thing that you can try to do to get more traffic:

          • Post on Hacker News, you could even try to post multiple times if you don't get traction the first time(this is allowed)
          • Join Sub-reddits/FB groups about web design/business and post your website in comments when it's relevant. Make sure to check rules before doing this, some may not allow self promotion at all.
          • Interview people, something like this: Find a website that you like and that is worth adding to BubblingLab, then tell them about what you do and that you would like to ask them a few questions about their design choices. Post that on your blog, send them the link and you can tell them to share it with their followers, most people would probably share it, because it will benefit them too.

Not sure if it is just me, but I'm not sure what problem this is solving, or why I could/should use it.
