Given your Indie Hacker attitude, how would you approach Art?
Let's put on some defeatist, grim, opposite-of-rose-tinted-glasses. Value of photographs is businesses grabbing free marketing pics from Unsplash, consumers infinite scrolling through Instagram at less than 2 seconds per shot. Value of music is the approximately-floating-point-error a playtime per song fractioned off a $9 Spotify subscription. Value of instructional content on Youtube is worth a dozen takedowns a month, or if you're lucky, only demonetizations and others earning on it. Value of design is upvotes from other designers who have received an invite to join Dribbble. Nobody cares, popularity is driven by economics of paid marketing deals, and creativity is better left as a pastime for people with a stable income.
Let's put on some rose-tinted glasses. Indie musicians can release their albums on Bandcamp, earning ~80% of each sale. Authors can sell physical books on Lulu with on-demand printing and still earn ~50% of sales, or ~90% on ebooks. Consumers are willing to support indie creators, as these platforms, Patreon, and others show.
However, these are just tiny glimpses of the landscape, and mostly looking at the various platforms with their pitfalls and opportunities. How would you, with all your IndieHacker optimism, growth thinking, and modern internet knowledge, create a sustainable business in art?
Perhaps some of you come up with ideas on how to make "a new better platform for art". I'm sure the world needs more of those - I wholeheartedly believe individual creators deserve bigger cuts than the traditional publishers pay out. I also believe there should be better ways for individual creators to get real engagement, actual feedback, and strong encouragement.
Perhaps some of you come up with ideas on how you would start branding yourself, do product development on your art, figure out some Pareto principle thinking on catching a couple of high-paying "whales". I'm sure a business-minded artist can figure out a way towards success, however it would be defined.
