How would you launch and grow a workout app only for push ups?

Title says it all. It's an app entirely focusing on push up workouts - how would you launch it and how would you grow it?

Just so you know, I was doing a lot of chest exercises when I started going to the gym.

Strong chest muscles + weak back muscles from inactivity and lot of sitting in front of computer caused my posture to be very very bad, which in turn led to shoulder and back problems so severe I had to give up on the gym for almost 2 years.

Before rolling your app I would strongly ask you to consult with physicians if your application does not pose danger to people. You should encourage back exercises as well in your app, to make sure people build muscle in balanced way and not end up with back problems.

Hey, thanks for the heads up! That's very good and important to know. I will look into that and ask people who know about this - I definitely don't want to endanger people because of that, so thank you very much!!

In fact, I would be a potenial client if you included back exercises also.

You can find good "at home" exercises for the back - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLZQ7tBJYQ4

But hey, I am not a physician myself, so maybe I was just very unlucky with my back.

Good luck with your app. :)

Thanks, I'll reach out to you as soon as I include them! Also thanks for the Video!
The problem is, that I want to track the users exercises with his phone (e.g. with distance measure, AR etc.) - So I need to find exercises that allow the user to place the phone anywhere and just let it track and guide the user

There is a template for it so you can save your time building your MVP. Have a look at it below. It already contains the integration with Stripe and other features that you'll need to track workouts.

Hey thanks for the suggestion! I'm skipping the MVP and doing the app directly for iOS because I need to access on-board cameras and sensors. If the app fails, I'll open-source it - otherwise, I'll extend the app functionality and create an Android version too :)

Giving the current environment with a boom in home workouts and increased time spent on social media, I'd create a "push-up challenge" where people post a video of themselves doing push-ups.

Another thing I'd do is try to partner up with as many influencers as possible which they would endorse your product.

Above all, you app should be built with the help of fitness professional or physicians.

    1. 1

Hey, thanks for your answer! How would you go about bringing people to do the "push-up challenge"? I can't just create Social Media accounts and just tell them to do the push-up challenge, so where would you start with this?

      1. 2

I would make a list of other "challenges" that went viral in the past years and try to see how they got started. It's most likely a combination of timing, audience, context and a bit of luck.

I'm no expert in viral videos/challenges but here's something to get started: https://neilpatel.com/blog/creating-a-viral-video/

Thanks for the advice and the link, it helps a lot!! 🙌🏽

In my opinion, this isn't the best idea for such a highly targeted application. I really love sports and have spent a lot of energy building muscle, but now this is a problem. COVID-19 has done its job. So, I would choose an app that has all types of workouts. It's more convenient for me as a consumer. Personally, I would spend a lot of time switching from one app to another. I cannot devote so much time to this, I try to increase efficiency in everything: change training every 12 weeks, take safe peptides (https://paradigmpeptides.com/product-category/sarms/) and vitamins. This is important for me as well as for other consumers. Therefore, I would advise you to make the application more convenient and help people do quality workouts, saving their time.

I've always thought something like this would be fun. I've always been terrible at pull-ups, so would like something like this to track pull-ups.

A challenge seems like a great way to get people engaged. If you help people share milestones with their friends, it could help spread the word.

You could use something like pose estimation with TensorFlow to count the reps as well as with the posture.

People that want to track push ups can already track in a habit tracker and people like me that at times did push ups almost exclusively don't need to track it at all as it's just one thing to keep in mind. If it's about video, then again, does it make sense for one particular exercise?

I am definitely enjoying apps that can take you through core workout routine, show you how to do things properly and track your progress. But I have to ask, why just push ups? What is this app actually about?

  8. 1

I don't know much about the market, so I'd first find out who wants to do a workout with just pushups. Being ethical, I would also check if a push-up only workout is going to help people. If people purchased this and it was bad for them I'd hate to make money that way.

Common sense tells me that only doing pushups will sort of make you out of balance with some muscles stronger than others, and may cause issues. It could be that your pushups fit into a wider exercise plan, but then why would I want something that does just one of my exercises?

Also as a shameless plug - I wrote an open source web app to help time exercises, aimed as stretching. I have not plans to moneyify it but feel free to have a play. https://stretchtimer.com/

For the curious folks, here's a quick video of the prototype so far: https://twitter.com/xyassini/status/1241150950590611456

    Sounds like a good idea.

While there may be many flavors to this (goal-focused training support, competitions, how-to descriptions, ...) I am probably a potential user for some 😁

Launching these day sounds ideal. Gyms are closed, people take time to explore stuff and health is a High-Profile topic.

I would recommend a minimalistic app plus a feature voting and idea collection page on Productific to find out what users want next (a free SaaS I created).

In case the app is content-heavy try to use cross plattform content so you can better tackle both, iOS and Android. You could even try multiple apps: a guide, a trainer and a tracker using shared parts to find what "catches on" better.

Since my apartment gym's been closed; I've been wanting to do pushups. Haven't though.

    Launch:
Timing- Right now is perfect timing. So many people at home without access to a gym.
Message - Results driven. I do so many things at the gym. Can pushups really replace them? Have a 30 day pushup plan that you funnel people to.
Channels: I see insta and facebook ads working well. Obviously word of mouth, reddit, and other online forums too.

    Product:
Make sure it's simple, engaging, and makes me want to do pushups. Idk how you do that lol.

    Other thoughts:
Any lower body workouts to suggest too?

    1. 1

Well the timing is perfect right now, indeed. But I need at least one more week to get the simple things done - I may release a simple version then and add many more features in the future.
About lower body workouts: Until now, I am focusing mainly on push ups. From my research until now - there are different techniques to train your chest, shoulders, triceps, biceps and even abs. I need to consult a personal trainer or someone who actually knows enough about that first until I provide them as guided workouts in the app.
      Thanks for your suggestions!

Hey Yassine! I think the more context the better. Can you elaborate a bit more about the app? Does it only track the raw number of push ups? What are the main features?

Try to ask these questions to yourself:

    • How would a user benefit by using your app? (Improve their push up strength? Encourage them to be more disciplined?)
    • Nail the app copy first by answering those questions

There are tons of fitness app out there, so specificity is extra important with this. Just be as specific as niche as possible with the product desc.

      Thanks for your help!
The app tracks the users distance to the phone. So you lay your phone beneath you and just do your push ups - the app will keep track of them, count them and tell you when to go up and when to go down or hold.
I plan to use this technique to provide more workouts than just push ups in the long term - but first, I need to see if the app actually is requested and I need feedback for it.

Okay now, this is interesting! Start thinking about the story first, why would users need this now? Don't think too much about "growth hacks" or going viral, just start by being helpful and useful. Won't recommend spending money on ads too, start with social maybe.

This is a great timing since everyone is working from home. Frame it as something like "The simplest app to track your pushups the right way. No thinking, just exercise."
