How would you make a living out of your knowledge?

Hi everyone,

My name is Alberto I am 38 years I have created 2 startups (0 revenue so far) while doing contracting and now I don't know what to do next.

Since we started with the lockdown I have been fantasizing about the idea of sharing my 14 years experience as .net Senior developer to make a living out of it (while I continue trying new projects).

After 2 weeks of looking around on the internet here are the options I can see:

  1. Create a Podcast and sell subscription
  2. Create courses and sell them
  3. Create a youtube channel and sell advertising or 3rd party promotions
  4. Sell 1 to 1 mentorship or 1 to many mentorships
  5. Create a youtube channel/twitch and have a Patreon
  6. Selling online live courses to a group
  7. Write a book
  8. Write a blog and sell affiliates or advertising

Which one do you think has more potential? any other?

PS: I have 0 experience with Youtube, Instagram, Podcasts, Twitch, or Patreon but I am willing to learn anything to make it work.

Thanks

I think it's great that you're doing research to evaluate your options, which is a step lots of people skip in favor of just jumping into something. That said, rather than working forward from the type of product you want to create, I'd recommend trying to work backwards from the problem you want to solve for people. Try answering questions like these:

    • Who is my customer, and who isn't my customer?
    • What problem do they have that I can solve?
    • How do I know they care about this problem enough to pay for a solution?
    • What else are they doing to solve this problem?
    • When and how are they coming across these other solutions?
    • What makes these customers unique?
    • etc.

The better your profile is of the people you want to sell to, the better your ideas will be for (a) how to structure your product to be amazing for them, (b) what channels to use to find them, and (c) how to charge. That's the essence of product-market fit, product-channel fit, and business model-market fit, respectively.

Wow, that made me think. I thought I had all the homework done but is obvious I haven't.

It makes total sense I will focus on my ideal customer and try to move from there.

    Hey Alberto,

Right now, in terms of traction, with enough skills on video editing and about the basics of being in front of the camera, your safest bet is probably Youtube. If you also know how to optimise your videos for Youtube search and recommendations, then that's probably the best way to monetise your knowledge, at scale

That said, you're looking at considerable investment in terms of actual costs, time and energy.

I do SEO content marketing for a living, and while it isn't really hard, most of the tricky stuffy really boils down to good old tactics. If you really want to take on blogging, unless you have a very strong branding strategy and angle, most of the time, SEO is really the only way for you to scale up and monetise your knowledge.

And unless your topics are broad and still have "profitable" keywords, then you might have to pair up your blogging efforts with a SaaS or even some consultancy work.

That said, marketing always works best when you develop a community, earn their trust and monetise their attention, so an ebook might work, or some advertisement partnerships.

But, to be honest, all of these things don't need to exist independently from one another. You can also have a content repurposing funnel that may work along these lines:

    1. You create a script for your video
    2. You create and market your Youtube video
    3. You repurpose some of the script into a blog
    4. You publish the blog
    5. You include the video on the blog
    6. You repurpose them even further through social media captions or replying to questions on various forums to cement your reputation
    7. Maybe once you've gotten enough people, you can repurpose your content even further into an ebook on a lucrative topic

Very good point, I love the idea of connecting few options working together to generate more value with less effort.
