How would you monetize our site?
We're Coverr.co, a side project which many would call the "Unsplash for videos". We're basically giving free stock footage for free and now getting into the world of music, too.
Some numbers:
- We have about 200K unique visitors every, only recently introduced the option to actually sign up as a user
- All traffic is organic. We experience a huge spike when the pandemic hit, as more people were looking for background videos for Zoom
- We're making our revenue through affiliate partnership with Shutterstock. We show STSTK videos next to our videos, based on your search/browse, and we get paid when a referral makes an order on STSTK.
- We also have a pretty awesome API, which lets developers use our videos in their apps - we give it for free, too, and you need to place our logo in the experience.
Biggest challenges right now:
- Grow our traffic, with focus on the US.
- Create more revenue channels.
what's your user vs visitor count look like? is there incentive to sign up beyond favoriting? monetizing that user base is one option down the road. a paid tier of videos is another possibility that ties into that, but there'd have to have a big differentiator to make that worthwhile. also definitely depends on your audience themselves.
and of course you can increase partnerships and go after other affiliate/referral programs that make sense. has your advertise with us program gotten much traction? (I mean, aside from landing shutterstock! 😅)
users are a super new feature so super early to determine, and we're working on more incentives to sign up (higher quality resolution, ability to see download history, creating collections, access to community, etc...) we're not going to have a paid tier, videos will remain free, it's the most essential part of our offering, that - and the fact our content is both free and high quality.
We're thinking of more affiliate partnerships but looking for some that bring real value. We're getting offers for advertising in our newsletter, but looking for someone to manage our whole newsletter strategy and execution..

perhaps one partnership avenue might be educational (is that already what you meant by bring real value?!). helping teach would-be contributors the legal ins and outs, or videography lessons for those who wish they could shoot their own B-roll? those aren't quite right but it could fit right in with a community aspect!
