I am a researcher in Natural Language Processing and I am bored at home AGAIN. Anybody need help for their project?

Earlier this year --- in the mid of the lockdown --- I was really bored at home and I offered my free help here on IH for NLP projects: I had lots of fun!

In the Netherlands the curve is looking bad again, so here I am: ask away and I'll do my best to help you. Also, check out the previous Q&A here.

    Hi Angelo,

I'm a linguist transitioning into the NLP field, I'm wondering if you have any suggestions of some personal projects I could do to boost my profile for potential employers.

    Thanks!

      Hey Andrew,

something that you could do is to partecipate in a shared task, like https://alt.qcri.org/semeval2020/index.php?id=tasks.

If you don't get caught too much in the leaderboarding mindset, shared tasks are a nice opportunity to quickly jump into action: you get a dataset, some background papers to read, often a baseline and there are all sort of tasks, some are easier (usually classification tasks) and some much harder (e.g. structured prediction tasks like syntactic parsing or sequence labelling).

I myself joined plenty of shared tasks as a student and had lots of fun! I think that having won one of these, even landed me my current job.

Thanks, I'll definitely check that out!
