I Believe in Subscriptions, But Here’s Why I’m Offering a Lifetime Deal

I’ve built several products over the years, and most of them used a subscription model. Recurring revenue brings stability and helps sustain long-term quality and support.
But here’s the thing: for indie developers like me (with basically no marketing budget), subscription products take a long time to gain traction. Validating the market is slow, and getting attention is even harder.

So I’ve been asking myself, what actually matters in the early stages of a product?
Growth. Especially revenue growth. User growth helps too, but the two usually go hand in hand.
The hardest part of a cold start is getting from 0 to 1. No users means no word of mouth. No word of mouth means no users. It’s a bad loop.
That’s why I’m offering a Lifetime Deal, it helps break the cycle by bringing in early adopters who are curious and willing to try something new. LTDs create momentum.
Even more importantly, early users give you insight. You can start learning how people use the product, which features they actually need, how long they stick around, and why they churn. Without users, you don’t get that data.

To be clear, LTDs aren’t risk-free.
The biggest tradeoff? Users pay once, but you’re on the hook to support them FOREVER. That includes customer service, server, and feature updates. With AI products especially, the marginal cost per user can be high.

But after weighing the pros and cons, I’ve decided to offer a limited-time lifetime deal for my new product, Snapdemo, priced at $59, which gives users lifetime access to all core features and future updates.
Snapdemo is a tool for creating interactive product demos. It supports real-time collaboration, just like Google Docs, so teams can build and edit demos together more smoothly. It’s useful anywhere you need to explain how your product works: landing pages, help centers, sales emails, and more.

I’m curious if others are thinking the same way, or have different thoughts or suggestions. I’d love to hear them.

Yeah I’ve been thinking the same. Subs are great long-term but they’re so hard to get off the ground if no one knows you.

      1. 1

Absolutely! It’s a tricky balance, but a lifetime deal can really help kickstart the initial buzz and user engagement. It’s all about getting those early adopters on board and using their feedback to shape the product moving forward. Have you considered how you’ll handle support and updates over time? That could be a key factor in maintaining a good relationship with your users.

    Interesting angle, Tim.
I’ve been wrestling with the opposite, instead of offering a lifetime deal, I’m building local-first, offline-first tools where my marginal cost per user is basically zero after download. That flips the risk equation. Like you don’t have to serve them forever, but you do have to get them in the door without the “cheap forever” hook.
My worry with LTDs is they attract a certain “deal hunter” crowd that might not be your best long-term champions. Do you feel the early momentum from an LTD offsets the risk of building a user base that’s less likely to advocate for the product over time?

Bright insights and bold move to offer such tool with all features for lifetime access. All the best for this marketing move to break the loop of repetitive word of mouth and new users by offering the latter to early users.

I thought about offering a lifetime plan too, but ended up choosing subscriptions.
Lifetime deals sometimes feel like a cash grab — like you're launching and then disappearing.
But I also get why users dislike subscriptions. Still figuring it out...

I am developing a search widget for squarespace and alot of people are giving them life time deal but i am not comfortable though it is affect number of sign ups on my website. But it is something that make me feel very wrong. Can you please convince me otherwise.

  6. 1

That’s a great initiative — I’ve been working on something related too, but from a different angle.
Instead of pitching to VCs, I collected 10+ live government grants (US + EU) and wrapped them into a single, clean digital guide.
If anyone’s curious, just search “Grant Masterkey Gumroad” — it might save you hours of research.

  7. 1

wow - that feels pretty risky Tim.
    lifetime support!!
But I guess if it works - you get revenue, and you get early feedback. OK I might be converted....almost!

I think the idea of an LTD is great with getting from 0-1. Its almost like a founding members special. But in a start-up, committing "for life" and paying for something that might later get outdated could be risky.

  9. 1

    Totally agree
getting from 0 to 1 is the hardest part, and LTDs can be a smart way to spark that early momentum. Snapdemo sounds super useful, especially with the real-time collaboration feature. Wishing you lots of traction with the launch!

  10. 1

Yeah, its a smart way to grow and an approach that I think is the best way to get from that 0-1 users in terms of revenue growth, its an honest way to grow through "back scratching" business techniques, support the app and we will support you back over the long term.

The other issue we often face is how to get eyes on our new software app, what advice would you have for someone trying to even get people to look at your app let alone hitting the buy button.

Love your SnapDemo app by the way, very cool.

  11. 1

Yes I agree going from 0 to 1 is the toughest part . That's a good decision you took.

  12. 1

Great call. Growth over perfect models makes a lot of sense early on.

Launching a new product as an indie developer often comes with the tough challenge of building traction from scratch especially when working with a limited or non-existent marketing budget. Subscription models may offer financial stability in the long run, but the initial hurdle of attracting users is steep. That’s where offering a Lifetime Deal (LTD) becomes a powerful tool. Not only does it bring in revenue upfront, but it also attracts early adopters who are willing to experiment and provide feedback. This helps break the cycle of invisibility and offers real, actionable insights into how your product is used, what features matter most, and what needs improvement.

With Snapdemo, a collaborative tool for creating interactive product demos, the LTD approach is both timely and strategic. Priced at $59 for lifetime access, it’s a compelling offer for startups, marketers, and product teams who need a simple yet powerful way to showcase their products. Snapdemo’s real-time collaboration feature makes it ideal for remote teams and customer-facing content creation. While LTDs come with long-term responsibilities like continued support and infrastructure costs the early momentum and learning they enable are often worth it. For developers seeking both growth and feedback, this model can be a smart move toward sustainable success.

Offering a lifetime deal can attract early adopters, build trust, and generate upfront revenue. It's a smart strategy for validating your product while keeping long-term goals like subscriptions in mind.

Nice product! I especially like the text-adding feature and, most importantly, the arrow that points to a specific element, very helpful.
However, I’ve encountered a frustration: I want to present information from a page that isn’t interactive (just a static report) and explain each part of it. The extension doesn’t seem to record scrolling through the report, so as a workaround, I tried clicking on each section I wanted to comment on to trigger a hotspot. That worked okay, but the problem is that I couldn’t remove any unwanted hotspots afterwards.

This means I have to capture a “perfect” recording in one go, which is really difficult when it involves around 20 clicks. It would be super helpful to have the ability to remove hotspots after recording, not just add them, at least for my use case.

The page that I am trying to demo (I've tested your prod on my prod).
I can not post links yet, so I've converted the link to base64: aHR0cHM6Ly9zY2FteS5pby9yZXBvcnQvc25hcGRlbW8uaW8=

I recently pulled together a clean guide to some lesser-known small business grants (US/EU). It includes live links + example applications.

Happy to share it if anyone’s looking for funding options outside of traditional investors.

    1. 1

It sounds interesting. Can you share more info, please?

      1. 1

Absolutely! I actually bundled everything into a simple digital guide.
You can find it by searching:
“Grant Masterkey: Unlock U.S. & EU Funding in Minutes” on Gumroad directly.

It includes 10 active grant programs, application samples, and all key links in one place.
Happy to hear your thoughts if you check it out!

Good thinking, but the price for a lifetime deal seems way too low for me. I would go for at least a year and a half payment - around 150 dollars.

    1. 1

Thank you for your recognition! The current lifetime deal price is an early special offer and won’t be a long-term price. Our main goals with this pricing are to validate the product and attract early users for feedback, it’s not solely about charging fees. The price may be adjusted in the future, but we hope early supporters can enjoy a more affordable rate.

  18. 1

Seems like a pain point of B2C rather then B2B, but yes pretty sure every indie creator has been there.

  19. 1

Subscription fatigue is real, but it tends to be more intense in certain customer profiles. I think businesses or medium-to-large companies can still manage with subscriptions. Lifetime deals are a cheat code for ICPs tired of subscriptions because you can always remove the deals later once you've gained traction, and just grandfather in existing users with these deals.

  20. 1

Subscription models is good as long as company is genuine and responsible enough however even on glitches people loose money

  21. 1

Subscription models have become the norm, widely adopted across industries, offering flexibility and continuous service. However, lifetime access models stand out for their value and generosity, providing users with lasting benefits. They often foster stronger trust and loyalty between businesses and customers. In a world of recurring payments, lifetime offerings feel refreshingly sincere.

    1. 1

Absolutely agree, lifetime deals can build a unique kind of trust that’s hard to achieve with subscriptions alone. For early-stage products especially, they also help drive initial traction and get valuable feedback from committed users. It’s a win-win when done thoughtfully.

Interesting timing - I just published our approach to AI-powered workflow consolidation when I saw your post. We're taking a similar philosophy of starting simple and evolving based on real usage patterns. Would be curious to compare notes on how you're validating feature priorities.

Will the demos from the LTD be watermark free? I mean, without your logo? If so, I'm interested.

    1. 1

Absolutely! All demos created with the LTD plan are 100% free of any watermarks or Snapdemo branding. Happy to hear you’re interested. Here’s the pricing page with all the details and features: https://snapdemo.io/pricing. Let me know if you have any questions!
