I Build Software Used by Thousands. Then I Quietly Published a Small Fiction Book.
No launch strategy. No waitlist. No metrics to track.
I've shipped 15+ apps under my solo studio. I know what a good launch looks like — product hunt posts, Reddit threads, conversion funnels, retention graphs. I know how to measure whether something worked.
Then I wrote a fiction book and realized I had no idea how to think about it.
ACHE: What Kind of Life Is This? is 32 short scenes. An unnamed Japanese city. A man named Rei moving through days that don't resolve — a coin drifting in floodwater, a misprinted business card, a vending machine that almost works.
There's no growth loop for that. No DAU. No churn rate.
Why a builder writes fiction
Software solves a problem. You can draw a straight line from user pain to your feature. The feedback is fast, sometimes brutal, always legible.
Fiction doesn't work like that. I wrote ACHE because I wanted to make something that couldn't be optimized. Something that existed outside the logic of retention and engagement. A thing that was just — there. Quiet. Finished.
As a solo dev you spend a lot of time building things that have to perform. ACHE was the first thing I made that was allowed to simply be.
What shipping a book taught me that shipping software didn't
Silence is not failure. With apps, silence means no one cares, fix the onboarding. With a book like this, silence is almost the point. The right reader finds it slowly. That's okay.
You can't A/B test a sentence. I wrote every scene the way I wanted it, then left it alone. No iteration based on feedback. No v2. It's done. That's terrifying and also a relief.
Distribution is still everything. Even for quiet books. It's on Kindle, Google Play Books, and Apple Books — not because I expect volume, but because friction kills discovery. Make it easy to find, then let it go.
The contrast that keeps surprising me
When an app breaks, I fix it. When a scene in ACHE lands wrong, it just — lands wrong. Forever. That permanence felt uncomfortable at first. Now it feels honest.
Software is never finished. Fiction is.
I think I needed to make something finished.
