I built 10 free SEO tools for my own blog's traffic problem — here's why it's working better than content alone

A few months back I was deep into an SEO overhaul of my blog (proarticleshub.com — a general content site that had grown messy over a few years of inconsistent posting). Standard stuff: fixing schema markup, restructuring categories into proper pillar/cluster content, cleaning up 100+ old posts that were bringing zero traffic.

Somewhere in that process I realized something obvious in hindsight: content alone is a slow way to earn links and repeat visits. Tools aren't.

Why tools instead of more articles

Articles compete with millions of other articles. A free, genuinely useful tool competes with almost nothing — there just aren't that many good free SEO utilities that aren't buried in ads or gated behind email signups.

So instead of writing article #118, I built a small suite of free SEO tools and put them on one hub page:

What surprised me building this as a solo person

I'm not a tools-company — I'm one person running a content site. I assumed building "real" tools would need a dev team. It didn't. Most of these are lightweight JS/PHP utilities that took an evening each once I had the UI pattern figured out. The bulk versions (scanning 500 URLs) took longer, but were still a weekend project each, not a sprint-team effort.

The bigger lift wasn't the code — it was deciding to bother at all instead of just writing another "10 SEO tips" post that looks like the other 500,000 SEO tips posts already indexed.

The actual payoff (so far)

I'm early in measuring this properly, so I won't throw out fake numbers. What I can say directionally:

The tools give people a reason to bookmark the site instead of bouncing after one article
They're the kind of thing people naturally mention/link to when someone asks "any free tool for X" in a forum or Slack — which is a much more natural link-building motion than outreach emails
They also let me eat my own dog food — I use the bulk checkers monthly to audit my own 100+ posts, which is honestly why I built the H1/alt-text/broken-link ones in the first place, before I even thought about sharing them publicly
If you're doing something similar

If you run a content site and you're stuck choosing between "write article #119" or "build something useful," I'd lean toward the tool — even a small one solving one annoying problem you personally have. You end up building it for yourself first, which means it's actually useful, and sharing it is just a side effect.
