I built 40+ free browser tools in 3 months — here's what SEO actually looks like from zero

I've been building UltimateTools (ultimatetools.io) since late 2025 — a collection of browser-based utilities for PDFs, images, QR codes, and games. Everything runs client-side with no server uploads.

Here's an honest look at where things stand after 3 months.

Why client-side?

The original idea was simple: most online tools (Smallpdf, TinyPNG, ILovePDF) upload your files to their servers. For PDFs with contracts or images with personal content, that's a genuine privacy concern. Building everything with the Canvas API, pdf-lib, and pdfjs-dist meant I could offer the same functionality with zero data leaving the user's device.

It also removed my server costs — processing happens in the browser, not on my backend.

What I built

40+ tools across 6 categories: PDF tools, image tools, QR tools, text tools, coding tools, and games. The games category was unplanned — I added Minesweeper on a whim and it became one of the most-visited pages before I'd written a single article about it.

The SEO reality

Current traffic: ~15-30 clicks/month from organic search.

43 pages indexed. Most ranking on page 2-3 for competitive keywords like "image compressor online free" and "json to csv converter." Impressions are growing — 300+ in the last 28 days — but clicks require page 1 rankings.

What's worked:

  • Publishing 30+ articles on dev.to, Medium, and Hashnode builds topical authority

  • FAQ schema on every tool page generates rich result snippets

  • Games get return visitors that PDF/image tools don't — Minesweeper had 14 impressions before I'd written anything about it

What hasn't worked yet:

  • Organic link building is slow on a new domain

  • dev.to/Medium links are nofollow — they help topical authority but don't pass PageRank

  • 6-9 months to meaningful traffic is realistic for a new domain, which is longer than I expected

Monetization

Honest answer: nothing yet. AdSense is the plan once traffic grows, but at 30 clicks/month it's not worth activating.

The tools save people real time — I've had users thank me for the PDF password protect tool specifically. The gap between "people find it useful" and "people find it via search" is the current challenge.

What's next

  • Adding a 2-player local mode to the memory card game

  • Launching on Reddit and Hacker News this week

  • Adding Stripe for a simple premium tier (ad-free + higher batch limits)

If you're building something similar or have thoughts on monetization for utility sites at low traffic, I'd love to hear it.
