I built a Chrome extension after my mom's email got hacked. Here's what I learned shipping a privacy tool.

Last year about nine months ago, my mom called me panicking. Someone had accessed her email, reset her bank password, and sent phishing links to everyone in her contacts. The breach had been sitting in a public database for over a year - she just never knew.

She's not technical. She had no idea what a tracker was, what fingerprinting meant, or that the free "VPN" she'd downloaded was likely selling her data.

I'm a developer. I felt genuinely responsible for not protecting her.

That's when I started building Digital Shield.


The real problem I was solving wasn't technical - it was friction.

There are great privacy tools out there. uBlock Origin. Have I Been Pwned. Privacy Badger. But ask a non-technical person to set them up, configure them, and actually understand what they're seeing - and most give up.

My mom needed one thing that just worked. No setup. No jargon. No 14 separate extensions.

So I built around that constraint hard. Every feature had to pass the "mom test" - could she understand what it was doing in under 5 seconds?


The features that surprised me the most in user feedback:

  1. The Website Safety Score (0–100%) - I almost cut this because I thought it was too simplified. Turns out it's the first thing every new user mentions. People love having a number. It makes the abstract concept of "is this site safe?" feel real and actionable.

  2. SpyGraph Visualizer - Showing users a literal map of who a website is sharing their data with was a risk. I thought it might overwhelm people. Instead, it became the #1 shareworthy feature. Someone tweeted a screenshot of a news site with 47 third-party connections and it went semi-viral in a privacy subreddit.

  3. Pause Browsing for families - I added parental controls almost as an afterthought. They became 30% of our PRO upgrade reason. Parents are desperate for simple tools that don't require router config or separate software.


The data breach alert feature taught me something about user psychology.

We integrated with breach databases so users can check if their email was compromised. The feature is factual, neutral, informative.

But when we first launched it, people were upset - not at the hackers, at us. "Why is your extension telling me my data was breached?"

We had a UX problem, not a feature problem. We reframed the entire UI: instead of "Your email was found in 3 breaches," we changed it to "We found something you should know - here's exactly what happened and what to do now."

Same data. Completely different emotional response. Support tickets dropped 80%.


Where we are now:

  • 15 languages supported

  • PRO features: network firewall, anti-fingerprinting, AI privacy policy summaries, email alias generation

  • Zero data collection on our end - everything stays encrypted on device

If you're building in the privacy space, I'm genuinely happy to talk shop. It's a hard space to monetize (users want free), but people who do pay are loyal in a way I haven't seen in other SaaS products. They feel like they're buying protection, not software.

And honestly - build things for the people in your life who can't protect themselves online. It keeps you honest about what actually matters.
