Today, I'm officially launching Kickabyte (beta) on Indie Hackers!
Kickabyte is a community for developers to ask and answer questions like Stack Overflow, supplemented by screencasts. Kickabyte's integration with YouTube and Loom makes recording and sharing screencasts simple.
I need your feedback so I can iterate on the idea. Tell me what you like, don't like, and what I should build next. If the idea doesn't make sense, I want to know that too!
If your differentiator is screencasts, make sure you have that on the site, front and center! "Kickabytes: screencasts on every programming topic" or something like that :)
Thanks Max, great point. Would that be a compelling value proposition for you as a developer? In other words, does the idea of screencasts on every programming topic excite you?
I personally don't learn well from videos, and have only rarely used screencasts. I do really well with tutorials - "follow me as we build this together" kinds of things - here's an example. But, businesses like Udemy are thriving, so maybe I'm just not your target customer - it seems like videos do work for lots of people.
The concept is very unusual, and can you tell me what's the point to give so short answers as videos?
Thanks and good luck!
Thanks for the feedback!
What's important is not the duration of the screencasts. They can be as long or as short as necessary to answer the question. The fact that answers must include screencasts is what's novel. Many people learn better by watching and listening to others, rather than reading documentation or code samples.
One thing - the power of Stackoverflow by (I assume majority users) is:
I would add a transcripts - with them you will not be missing on the Stackoverflow folk.
On top that without the transcript you're going to miss on a lot of SEO. I rarely go to SO to find answers, Google just send me there right away 95% of the time.
Excellent point, definitely agree. I will look into adding transcripts.
Thanks for the feedback!
It's very clear, thanks.
Thanks for your response, I had the impression that your site is rather about problem solving, not about learning? I can't imagine stackoverflow with videos instead written answers.
I think problem solving and learning go hand in hand.
Essentially, it's Stack Overflow supplemented by screencasts. The written code and explanation are very important, but I've encountered lot of situations on Stack Overflow where a screencast would have been very helpful in understanding either the question or the answer better. That's where Kickabyte comes in. Does that make sense? Maybe I need to do a better job explaining it.
I tried to email you at hello@kickabyte and it came back undeliverable.
