I built a curated AI tool directory powered by automation — here's why and how

Over the last few months, I’ve been building Hey It’s AI — a curated directory to help founders, creators, and small business owners discover the best AI tools to automate tasks, create content, and grow their businesses.

With AI tools launching every day, the space is chaotic. Some are amazing, others are half-baked — and most people don’t know where to start. I wanted to fix that.

I designed the site from scratch and built in automation that:

  • Creates daily blog posts using Make + OpenAI (use cases, tutorials, and tool features)

  • Updates listings with fresh content

  • Allows founders to submit and promote their tools easily

My goal was to make the discovery experience both helpful and honest — no clutter, no spammy ads, just useful tools and content that gets to the point.

It’s still early, but I’m excited to keep improving it. Next steps:

  • Sharpen content quality and categories

  • Build more use case-based filters

  • Grow community and collaboration with AI tool founders

If you're working in the AI space — or building something similar — I'd love to hear what you've tried, what worked, and what didn’t. Always open to feedback, partnerships, or just connecting with fellow indie builders.

Really love this approach, curation + automation is exactly what the space needs right now. The update and content loop you’ve built into Hey It’s AI is super thoughtful. We’ve been building something similar with Chessvia.AI, an AI chess coach that adapts in real time and totally get the challenge of standing out with quality and clarity.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, we do believe so and want to fill that gap in the AI space.

It seems like it costs money to list a tool there. What do you actually offer? Meaning is your directory popular among ai-users? Is it possible to find in top search results? Do you have newsletter where you include newly added tools and if so, how many subscribers do you have?

I mean, could you elaborate on what value your directory offers? How is it different from https://theresanaiforthat.com/ - (which is free BTW to list a tool)?

Hi Alex, thanks for the comment. We offer exposure to all that involves AI. Our users, being AI enthusiasts, founders and/or developers, tend to seek Hey It's AI to search for tools that will suit their needs. Founders seek exposure to their startups. We are building a base of subscribers that it's now over 2500 subscribers, and will soon launch a newsletter. Hey It's AI is different from other tools directories, because we connect tools with news and automations. Actually it's not free to list a tool on there's an ai for that. It costs a substantial amount of money.

It is free to list a tool on There's an AI for that - but additional promotional features are paid obviously. And I know a dozen more directories that are free to list a tool on - that's why I was asking what makes you different - what you offer that would make people list their tool for a fee on you site and not somewhere else for free.

I understand, but I was really sharing my experience with Hey It's AI, and not with other directories. I'm not here to discuss how others decide what's best for them, but since you brought up theresanaiforthat, I went to their website and check again, and when you fill the form to submit a tool, the submit button actual says "Pay & Submit Tool". I can only talk about Hey It's AI, and from our perspective and understanding, if a founder/developer is really serious about their tool/startup, then you will be aware that at some point you would have to make an investment. That investment can be achieved in whatever way you want, being on theresanaiforthat or Hey It's AI or other directory.

From Hey It's AI perspective, we are here to make the AI space safe and reachable, meaning that serious startups can show their work and value, and users can search for them and actually get real results by using them.

This is a solid project—clean, focused, and genuinely useful in a crowded AI space. Love the automation with Make + OpenAI and your emphasis on honest curation. Excited to see where you take it. Open to connecting or collaborating, especially around AI use cases in e-commerce. Great work!
