I Built a “Fake Office” System to Make Working Alone More Focused.

I’ve been a solopreneur for years — and the harshest truth I’ve learned over the years? Too much of freedom kills your dreams. And sadly, It’s not just your daily productivity that takes a hit. Deadlines slip, you spend too much time on the unnecessary details and tasks feel overwhelming or paralysing, especially you have ADHD. As the Parkinson’s Law says: "Work expands to fill the available time and longer projects tend to prove it, more often than not.

I often found myself wishing for the discipline an office brings, just without the part where I’m building someone else’s dream instead of my own. That is the reason why I built Hocus — a mindfulness and productivity system that gives solo-workers the structure and accountability of an office, helping them stay focused daily and stick to long-term goals.

So, What exactly is Hocus & How does it work?

Think of Hocus as a mock virtual office for solo workers — with all the structure you need, and none of the things you hate.

It’s built on two simple yet powerful ideas:

  • An “Accountability Boss” — Not just an accountability partner, a real trained expert who will draft a personalised plan to improve your overall focus and productivity, would do upto 3 daily check-ins (Morning, Mid-day & Night) to make sure that you’re sticking to your to-do list and daily screen-time limits, and evaluate your growth each week, to check progress and find pain-points.

If you’ve ever tried a personal trainer or a dietician in the past, you would know how much of a game-changer external accountability and proper guidance can be.

Accountability Boss

  • 24/7 Supervised Workrooms for blocks of Deep Work—Virtual co-working sessions with small groups of people, supervised by a trained expert. Sessions are divided into 1-hour intervals, with a quick hourly check-in of your Screen-time (Phone screen-times only, unless otherwise specified). Cameras are optional during work sessions, since the goal is not to monitor your every activity, but to generate internal motivation to remain focused.

You commit to working for a certain number of hours of deep work at a stretch and the supervisor makes sure that you stick to the commitment, without wasting time on social media. It’s particularly helpful for those who struggle to focus on tasks for long durations at a stretch.
Focus Workrooms

It’s designed to keep you focused and productive throughout the day — so you don’t lose track of time or feel overwhelmed by a growing to-do list. Plus, everything is on your terms: your pace, your goals and your version of progress.

Why this works, when Accountability partners & Study groups fail

It’s an interesting idea, but let’s be honest, we’ve all tried some version of it in college or signed up for those accountability apps, but none of them have worked. So, what makes this special?

In most cases, any form of external accountability gives impressive results and you have a good streak of a few days, weeks or in rare cases, maybe even months. However, there are certain inevitable issues with those systems which show up eventually, derailing you from your disciplined routine and going back to it feels much harder than before. Let me list out a few ways in which I have tried to address some of those issues -

  1. Inconsistency/ Unpredictability - Most accountability tools leave your schedule up to chance - unpredictable partners, ad-hoc check-ins, or inconsistent work slots. Hocus removes the guesswork by offering Customised check-in time and 24-Hour Workrooms. It’s like a 24-Hour gym with a personal trainer. No excuses, No complaints.
  2. Accountability Shouldn’t Depend on Awkward Communication. Messaging your accountability buddy, rescheduling calls, explaining delays—it’s exhausting. Traditional systems rely too heavily on human communication, which creates friction. With Hocus, you get to choose the “tone” of your accountability boss, depending on whether motivating words work for you or strictness. And we have a well-defined strategy and set of responses to get you back on track.
  3. Guilt - Most accountability tools use guilt as fuel—missed check-ins, passive-aggressive nudges, or punishments. Hocus takes a different path. It doesn’t shame you for falling off. It nudges you back into structure gently, like a supportive routine that always welcomes you back, without judgment.

Here’s a fun little feature we’ve included: a confession box where you can admit to not being totally honest about your past performance — no need to say it directly to your Accountability Boss.

  1. Finally, Accountability systems fail because they treat symptoms. Hocus fixes the root cause. Most tools try to fix poor discipline with surface-level solutions—notifications, to-do lists, or check-ins. But Hocus goes deeper. It creates an immersive, structured environment that mimics the external pressure of a real office, shifting your mindset and environment—not just your reminders. It’s not about nagging you; it’s about changing the way you show up to work.

If you were productive in your early years, but lost your discipline once you got more freedom in university or work, Hocus could be just the right system to bring back the work ethic that you once had.

A practical Quick-start Manual

If you’re working on an indie project, Hocus can help you ship faster by structuring your day around focused work blocks. It enforces deadlines so you don’t get stuck chasing perfection or wasting time on the wrong things.

it also helps improve attention and mindfulness — and it’s flexible enough for personal, health, or financial goals too.

If you just want to give it a try, here’s a simple, no-nonsense guide to get started:

→ Fill out our short questionnaire answering a few things about yourself, your goals and the kind of Accountability Boss you would prefer. We would assign the best suited expert to guide you with the process.

→ Once you're onboard, Your accountability boss helps you devise a suitable routine for yourself and you set your goals for the day. If your goals are too vague or unspecific, they will assist you writing better SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) goals.

→ You set targets for Mid-day & Night check-ins. If you miss your Mid-day targets, your accountability boss will motivate you to catch up.

→ You can join virtual workrooms where our supervisor will ask you to commit to a certain number of hours of work and screen-time. You can also set custom goals or targets. If you miss your targets, you’ll be asked to explain and lose some points (we’ve added a fun layer of gamification — full details on the website).
→ There are bunch of other fun features for mindfulness and productivity, you can choose which ones work the best for you.

The Mindfulness Element

Here’s the part which makes Hocus truly stand out: Hocus isn’t just about task completion.

It trains you to be fully aware and mindful, not only in the moment, but also of how you spend your time, energy, and focus. With our expert-led approach, you will be able to identify the biggest pain points in your focus and how you can tackle those, while inculcating daily habits to increase your overall mindfulness such as:

  • Noticing when you're mentally checked out and keeping a written tab of What caused it
  • Returning your focus gently
  • Setting limits on your screen time
  • Creating a Work time & Rest time distinction, so that you don’t aimlessly work until you no longer feel like it.

This is what makes Hocus different from productivity apps that push you to "grind harder." It’s sustainable focus, not mindless workaholism.

My Final Thoughts

If you’re solo — building, freelancing, bootstrapping, creating — you already know how easy it is to lose time to distraction, drift, or decision fatigue.

Hocus gives you the required gentle structure, shared presence, and mindful accountability. It’s not rigid. It’s real. And it works.

You don't need more magical productivity tools. You need something that helps you show up, daily.

That’s what Hocus is for.

Love this! The concept of a “fake office” makes so much sense — especially for solo builders with ADHD (can relate). The structure without shame is a game-changer. Excited to see how it evolves!

Hey 😊 Just wanted to say I really admire what you’re building with Hocus , the structured support for solopreneurs is such a smart and timely solution.

I’m a virtual assistant who helps founders stay organized by handling inbox management, scheduling, meeting coordination, and daily admin tasks, so they can focus on what matters.

If you ever need a hand with the behind-the-scenes work, I’d be happy to support you

Hello😊,Big fan of what you’re building with Hocus — the structure-for-solopreneurs idea is brilliant and much needed.

I’m a virtual assistant who supports founders by managing email, scheduling appointments, coordinating virtual meetings, and handling the small daily tasks that add up — so you can stay focused on building. If you ever need help keeping your calendar clear and your inbox calm, I’d love to support you.

    This really hit home.

That balance between freedom and structure is something I see so many solo founders wrestle with — especially devs and creatives working async. Freedom feels like the goal… until it starts working against you.

What you’ve built with Hocus sounds like the exact kind of mindful structure that’s been missing from most “productivity hacks.” Love the angle of shifting from reminders to real environment change — that’s a huge mindset shift.

Curious to follow this journey. It’s a rare mix of practicality and self-awareness.

Woho this looks interesting. I have been working from home since 7 years now. And literally it stopped my learning which I used to get in office.
Do you have any analytics dashboard of this which shows how much it helped individually

    1. 1

Hello, Launchshed, we have recorded testimonials from our past users, but we are going to implement a proper progress report soon. The idea is to record their current screen-time and productivity levels in the beginning, conduct a 21-day challenge and see how different the results are. We are starting the challenge in a couple of weeks. Will update in this post once we get the results :)

Truly impressive concept! Hocus not only boosts focus but also teaches mindfulness and discipline. Your writing style is engaging and highly informative — I really enjoyed reading it.

I checked the platform. Great concept. Just a question, when you mention 24/7, is it really 24/7? How do you manage that?

    1. 2

Hello, Karthik, yes, We have supervisors in rotating shifts. I know that 24/7 sounds like a bit of an overkill, but the idea was to offer the freedom to choose work blocks at any point in time. Since different people have different productive hours, we wanted to accommodate everyone.

      1. 2

That's great. In the era of AI agents, it's good to see some human interaction, especially in fields like these where the human element makes a big difference.

        1. 2

Yes, for me, personally, writing a to-do list is much more effective than using any app. The same way, the accountability method is as good as its ability to keep the user accountable for long term, not its ability to scale.

This looks like a really interesting concept. I worked as an indie for many years a while back and I think it would have helped me a lot. I think you could get even more interest by showing a demo video of someone using this. The screenshots give us a peek of the functionality but a video might invoke a more emotional response.
