I Built a Flashlight App That Doesn’t Spy on You (10K Downloads in 30 Days)

Hey IndieHackers! 👋

I’m Psyfo Peace, and I got tired of flashlight apps asking for location permissions, serving ads, or taking 3 seconds just to turn on a light. So I built Bright Torch—a zero-bullshit flashlight that respects your privacy and actually works.

Here’s the wild part: It hit 10K downloads in its first month with no marketing budget.

Why This Exists

Last year, the FTC fined a popular flashlight app for secretly selling user location data. Meanwhile, every other option was either:

  • Slow (why does a flashlight need a loading screen?)

  • Bloated (compass? QR scanner? Really?)

  • Or just plain sketchy

So I built Bright Torch with 3 rules:

  1. Instant light (tap = on, no delays)

  2. Zero permissions (no tracking, no ads)

  3. No nonsense (does one thing perfectly)

How It Spread

  1. Reddit Hustle

    • Posted in r/androidapps with: “Your flashlight app is spying on you. Here’s one that doesn’t.”

    • Result: 500+ downloads in 48 hours + feature requests (added strobe/SOS mode from feedback)

  2. IndieHackers/Hacker News

    • Shared the dev story (like this post!)—turns out people love rants about bad apps

    • HN title: “Show HN: A flashlight app that doesn’t suck”

  3. Grassroots Trust

    • Open-sourced the core to prove no data collection

    • Ran a “Pay What You Want” model (free app, donations for dark mode)

Results

  • 10K organic installs (80% from Reddit/word-of-mouth)

  • 4.8★ avg rating (“Finally, a flashlight app that just works”)

  • Even got featured in a “Privacy Apps” blog

Lessons

Solve obvious pain points (speed + privacy = instant demand)
Transparency = trust (open-source bits helped)
Don’t add features (my v1 had a compass… which nobody used)

Try It

AMA! Especially if you’re fighting bloated apps too.

    Love this, Psyfo 🔥
It’s amazing how often the “simplest” apps win when they focus on speed, trust, and zero fluff. The open-source angle + “pay what you want” is such a power move—it builds instant credibility and makes people want to support you.

Also, your r/androidapps hook (“Your flashlight app is spying on you…”) is marketing gold. Proof that a clear pain point + strong framing can outperform fancy ads.

Bookmarking this as a reminder that doing one thing perfectly is still a killer growth strategy in 2025

In the App info on Google Play Store it says the app has 10+ downloads. You said you've got 10k downloads in 48 hours. What is it?

    Brilliant .... privacy + speed + simplicity

Impressive launch, Psyfo — you nailed the formula of clear pain point + simple solution + trust 🚀
10K organic downloads in 30 days without a marketing budget is proof that product-market fit starts with listening to what people actually care about.

Here are 3 SaaS Coaching tips to take this even further:

Double Down on Your Core ICP
Identify your highest-converting audience segment from the 10K and tailor your messaging — this accelerates your Go-to-Market Strategy.

    Leverage User Advocacy
Your privacy stance is a Scaling Expert advantage — create lightweight referral or review loops so fans spread the word faster.

    Expand with Intentional PMF Iterations
Before adding features, test micro-enhancements that deepen engagement without bloating the app — a true PMF Advisor move.

Simplicity sells. Trust retains. Keep scaling smart.
