I built a free backlink exchange platform and launched it this week

I just launched BacklinkMatcher (backlinkmatcher.com) and wanted to share the story behind it.
--- The Problem ---
I run several niche websites and SEO tools. Backlinks are the #1 ranking factor, but getting them is either expensive (agencies charge hundreds per link), risky (buying links can get you penalized), or painfully manual (cold emailing strangers with a 2% reply rate).
Backlink exchanges are nothing new, website owners have been doing them forever. But there was no dedicated platform for it. You'd have to find partners on Reddit, Facebook groups, or random forums, agree on terms over email, and then... hope they actually place the link.
I decided to build the platform I wished existed.
--- What I Built ---
BacklinkMatcher is a marketplace for backlink exchanges. Here's how it works:
1. Submit your site — it gets reviewed and approved by me before appearing in the directory
2. Browse sites filtered by niche (40+ niches including Tech, SaaS, Security, Finance, AI, etc.) and DA range
3. Request an exchange with a personalized intro message
4. Chat with your partner via built-in messaging
5. Place the links, log them in the dashboard, and confirm your partner's link is live
The exchange itself is always free. No fees, no middlemen.

Pro plan at $7.99/month which includes:
- Automated weekly link crawling (checks if links are still live)
- Instant email alerts if a link goes down
- Verified Exchanger badge in the directory
- Weekly newsletter with new opportunities in your niche
- Priority placement in directory
--- Tech Stack ---
Built solo in a few weeks:
- Next.js 16 (App Router)
- MariaDB on Hetzner VPS
- NextAuth for authentication
- Resend for transactional emails
- Stripe for payments
- Cloudflare for DNS, SSL, and bot protection
- Cloudflare Turnstile on signup to prevent spam
--- Early Numbers ---
Just launched so very early, but the core product is fully working end to end — signups, site approvals, exchanges, messaging, link logging, and Stripe payments all tested and live.
--- What I Learned ---
The manual approval step for sites was the right call. It keeps the directory clean and prevents spam. As the platform grows this will need to be automated with some scoring system, but for now it's a feature not a bug.
Also: building the "free core + paid automation" model feels right for this space. The exchange itself has to be free to get traction. Nobody will pay just to find partners. But people will pay to not lose sleep over whether their links are still live.

- Get the first 100 sites listed
- Improve matching (suggest partners based on niche overlap)
- Add a public directory page for SEO
