When I started building GetPayslip.com, I wasn’t planning to become a founder. I just wanted to solve a small but annoying problem I saw people struggle with — creating clean, professional salary slips for freelancers, small businesses, or even employees who never received one from their employer.
In India (and many other countries), millions of gig workers, freelancers, and small businesses don’t have a standard process for generating salary slips. And many employers don’t bother providing them. But try applying for a loan, renting a house, or getting a visa — one of the first things you're asked for is a salary slip.
What do most people do? They either Google for a Word template or ask a friend to help — often ending up with outdated, messy, or non-compliant formats.
I realized: this could be a simple tool. It didn’t need an app download. It didn’t need sign-ups. It just needed to work.
I launched GetPayslip as a free, no-login, browser-based tool built with Next.js and Tailwind CSS, where anyone can:
Fill in basic salary and employer details
Choose a template (I’ve designed a few clean ones)
Download the payslip instantly as a PDF
That's it.
No ads. No watermark. No login wall.
I just wanted to make it useful enough that people would remember it and maybe tell someone.
I didn’t run ads. I just optimized a few landing pages around high-intent keywords like:
“salary slip generator”
“download payslip online”
“payslip format India PDF”
Within two months, I started getting organic traffic. Then a surprising thing happened: HRs from startups and even accountants began using it.
I saw spikes every month — mostly around salary days and tax season. Indie hackers love numbers, so here are a few:
500K+ monthly impressions (according to Google Search Console)
40K+ downloads/month
Top 3 results for “payslip generator India”
Yes, I get this question a lot: Why not monetize it?
My answer is simple — I built this to help, and I want to keep the core tool free forever. But I am exploring monetization ideas like:
Premium templates (for branding)
B2B APIs for HR platforms
Custom branding for small companies
Export integrations with accounting tools
But for now, GetPayslip is bootstrapped and running on minimal costs. The real value is the trust and usage it's gaining organically.
Here’s what I learned that might help fellow makers:
Start small. Solve a real, niche problem. Don't aim for a “startup.” Aim for usefulness.
Don’t overbuild. My MVP was a simple form and PDF output.
SEO still works. High-intent, low-competition keywords are gold — especially in underserved categories.
Don’t underestimate utility. People will use simple tools again and again if they just work.
I’m working on:
Adding Aadhaar/PAN card form tools (to create a government forms toolkit)
More templates and multilingual support (India has 22+ official languages!)
An AI-powered payslip autofill tool — where you just paste raw salary info
If you're building something similar or just want to connect, I’d love to hear your feedback.
