I built a geography quiz site with $0 budget — Google indexed it in 5 days. Here's my keyword-first playbook

Why a flag quiz?

I'm learning SEO, and I wanted to test one simple thesis: can a static HTML site (no framework, no backend) rank purely on keyword selection + on-page work? I picked "guess the flag" (41k US searches/month) and "flag quiz" (48k/month) as targets. The game itself is nothing new — the entire bet was on SEO, not gameplay.

What I built

• 8 pages: homepage + 7 continent quizzes

• Pure HTML/CSS/JS on Vercel's free tier, no signup, instant load

• Each continent page has 1,000+ words of actually useful content — flag memory tricks and commonly-confused flag pairs, not AI filler

That last part matters more than it looks. Google doesn't rank a quiz page because the quiz is fun — it ranks it because the page proves topical authority.

5 days of real GSC data

• Indexed: all pages requested, no issues

• Impressions: 48, clicks: 0 (expected this early)

• Asia page already at position 8 for "guess the asian country flag"

• Homepage stuck around position 32 for the big keywords — because domain authority is still 0

Mistake I made

I checked my own rankings with -site:reddit.com -site:twitter.com operators in a logged-in browser, and it polluted my GSC with fake queries. Use incognito mode.

What's next

First backlinks (DR 0 is what's holding the homepage back), and rewriting two pages that drifted from their target keyword (ranked 54-62).

Takeaway: for a brand-new site, keyword selection + on-page structure gets you indexed and into page 2-3 fast. Breaking into page 1 for competitive terms needs backlinks — that's the hard part I'm now facing.
